Promoting screening for congenital heart defects in children

Recently, nearly 1,000 children in Khanh Vinh commune were screened for congenital heart defects. The program was implemented by a team of experts and doctors from the Ho Chi Minh City Pediatric Cardiology and Congenital Heart Association and Khanh Hoa General Hospital. The activity opened up opportunities for timely treatment for many children in remote areas suffering from the above diseases.

Many children are screened

From early morning, many children were brought by their parents to Khanh Vinh Medical Center for screening for congenital heart defects. At the Examination Department, doctors and volunteers each had their own job: guiding children into the examination room, performing ultrasounds, consulting on preparation steps for treatment for sick children...

Most of the children who come for examination are ethnic minorities. Due to economic conditions, limited knowledge of medicine, and difficulty accessing specialized medical examination and treatment services, parents have never taken their children for an echocardiogram. At the time of screening, many cases do not show obvious external symptoms, the children still eat, sleep, and live normally, but after in-depth examination, the disease is discovered. For example, Ha Thi Nhu Nguyet (6 years old, Khanh Vinh commune) was diagnosed with a patent ductus arteriosus - a type of congenital heart defect. This is a disease that can be effectively treated if detected early, helping children develop normally and avoid dangerous complications. After the ultrasound, the doctors clearly explained the child's condition and treatment direction to the family. Ms. Ha Thi Thanh Hong - Nguyet's mother said: "From birth until now, my baby has developed normally. When I received the diagnosis, I was also worried. But with the doctor's advice and guidance, I am also assured and will take him for treatment soon". As for the case of Ms. Cao Thi Lua's son - Khanh Vinh commune, was diagnosed with pulmonary valve stenosis. Ms. Lua shared: "My baby has not shown any unusual signs since he was young, he just did not gain weight even though he was fed well. Thanks to the screening, we discovered that he had a congenital heart defect. According to the doctor's instructions, next time the team comes, I will take him to Khanh Hoa General Hospital so that the doctors can examine and perform cardiac intervention for him".

At the end of the screening, 7 children were found to have congenital heart defects such as: patent ductus arteriosus, pulmonary valve stenosis, ventricular septal defect, etc. 6 children were assigned to surgery at Khanh Hoa General Hospital; 1 more serious case was transferred to Children's Hospital 1 in Ho Chi Minh City for treatment.

Many cases are treated locally.

Dr. Do Nguyen Tin - Head of the Cardiovascular Intervention Unit, Children's Hospital 1, Ho Chi Minh City, who transferred congenital heart intervention techniques to Khanh Hoa General Hospital, said: “In mountainous communes, most children have little access to specialized medical services, especially in the field of cardiovascular disease. Therefore, we often choose to organize screening sessions in these areas. Through screening, if we detect any children with a disease, we will take them to the nearest medical facilities capable of cardiovascular intervention for treatment. Particularly at Khanh Hoa General Hospital, through the time of transferring congenital heart intervention techniques, the medical team here has performed very well; the equipment is guaranteed. Therefore, after screening, we only transfer severe cases to Ho Chi Minh City for treatment; cases of common malformations will be treated at the hospital. Treatment in the province helps reduce travel costs and time for patients and their families, while reducing the burden on upper-level facilities.” According to Dr. Pham Cong Nhut - Head of the Interventional Cardiology Department, Khanh Hoa General Hospital, if children with congenital heart defects are not detected and treated early, they will face dangerous complications. Not to mention, the intervention process when the child is older will be more complicated and expensive.

The free screening program for congenital heart defects not only helps in early detection and timely intervention for children with the disease, but is also an important step in the chain of technical transfer activities between the central and local levels. After more than 10 years of technical transfer in the form of hands-on training, Ho Chi Minh City Children's Hospital 1 has supported Khanh Hoa General Hospital in mastering many congenital heart intervention techniques. More than 1,000 children with congenital heart defects in Khanh Hoa province and neighboring provinces have been successfully treated through the program. Through technical transfer, doctors at Khanh Hoa General Hospital have directly and successfully treated many children right in the province; for severe or complicated cases, the two hospitals also maintain coordinated treatment right in the province to reduce costs for families and reduce the burden on upper-level facilities.
