Although there are currently no pumped storage hydropower plants in operation, according to the orientation, by 2030 Vietnam will develop about 2,400 - 6,000 MW of pumped storage hydropower capacity and by 2050 it can reach more than 20,000 MW.
Pumped storage hydropower is a type of electrical energy storage, in which water is pumped from below to a reservoir above to store energy and then discharged through a turbine to generate electricity when the power system needs it, playing an important role in balancing the load and ensuring stable operation of the power system. With different technical characteristics and functions compared to traditional power plants, pumped storage hydropower plants need a different electricity price mechanism compared to traditional power plants.
The development of the Circular aims to ensure a transparent and public electricity price mechanism, in accordance with current legal regulations, and to create favorable conditions for attracting investment, supporting the safe and efficient operation of the power system, and improving the quality of electricity.
