The scorching sun hitting the corrugated iron roof of Ngo Thien's family's old house made the living room stuffy. We were moved when we met Ngo Thien, a skinny boy weighing less than 28kg, with a bald head and crisscrossed with scars. Although he was tired, Thien still smiled gently, happily, and politely greeted us. Mr. Ngo Quyen Vuong (Thien's father) said that in December 2024 (when he was in 8th grade at Tran Phu Secondary School, Cam Ranh Ward), Thien often had headaches, dizziness, and poor appetite. When taking him to the Provincial General Hospital for examination, the doctors diagnosed Thien with a malignant brain tumor. Due to the severity of his illness, he had to be transferred to Children's Hospital 2, Ho Chi Minh City for timely treatment to save his life. In just a short time, Thien had to undergo 6 surgeries to remove the tumor and 4 more chemotherapy treatments, which caused all of his hair to fall out. During the treatment, the hospital was almost Thien's second home, so he had to drop out of school, far from school and friends. Sympathizing with Thien's situation, the school's Board of Directors created conditions for Thien to be kept on leave so that he could focus on his treatment. As for Thien, despite having a terrible disease, he always maintained an optimistic spirit. Thien said that he hopes to one day overcome the disease to reduce the burden on his father and grandmother as well as to return to school.

Thien's parents separated when he was 5 years old. Since then, he has lived with his father and grandmother. Thien's family is considered a near-poor household in the locality. Thien's grandmother has to collect scrap metal to make ends meet, while his father is a painter. His job is unstable and his income is unstable, averaging about 7-8 million VND/month. To have money to pay for hospital fees, travel expenses, accommodation, and medicine for his son, Mr. Vuong had to run around everywhere from relatives to friends and neighbors. The school, both paternal and maternal sides, and benefactors have donated nearly 60 million VND to support the family. Although Thien has health insurance that covers 95% of the cost, due to his serious illness, he must be treated with a special regimen for a long time, using many types of medicine not covered by health insurance, so the cost is very expensive. This week, Thien will continue to go to the city. Ho Chi Minh City scheduled a medical examination for a consultation with a doctor about his condition, but the family was almost broke, while the 30 million VND debt Mr. Vuong borrowed from the bank had not yet been paid off, including principal and interest...
Mr. Nguyen Binh Viet - Vice Chairman of Cam Linh Ward People's Committee shared: "The locality has paid timely attention, creating favorable conditions to support the family in part from the source of mobilizing donations from benefactors on holidays and Tet. At the same time, we have submitted a report to the superiors requesting emergency support for Thien to have more funds to treat the serious illness, thereby receiving support from the Provincial Center for Social Protection and Social Work of 15 million VND. In addition, the locality is guiding the family to prepare documents to be considered for social benefits for Thien in the coming time. The disease requires long-term treatment and is costly, so we really hope for the community's support to give Thien more strength to overcome the illness soon, and have the opportunity to continue going to school with his peers...".
