With a large scale, taking place in Ho Chi Minh City, Dong Nai and Dong Thap in November 2026, the largest national sporting event held every 4 years will have many highlights, especially the promotion of sports in the Olympic system.
This is an important policy to improve professional quality and prepare athletes for major international arenas such as the Asian Games.
Olympics, at the same time creating a new step in the development of high-performance sports in Vietnam.
Increase the number of Olympic sports, raise the level of Vietnamese sports
According to the approved plan, the 10th National Sports Festival is expected to hold 47 official competitions, divided into three major groups. Notably, the group of Olympic sports accounts for 22 sports.
Including athletics (including Ba Ra Cross Country climbing), aquatic sports (swimming, diving), gymnastics, sailing (rowing, canoeing/kayak, sailing, traditional boat), football (men's, women's 11-a-side and futsal), wrestling (freestyle, classical, beach wrestling), shooting, archery, weightlifting, judo, taekwondo, boxing, fencing, badminton, tennis, volleyball (indoor, beach), basketball (5x5, 3x3), handball (indoor, beach), cycling (road, off-road), table tennis, golf and triathlon.
Promoting Olympic events at the Games not only demonstrates the determination to improve achievements and aim for major arenas of Vietnamese sports, but also helps localities standardize their competition and training systems according to international standards. This is also an opportunity to discover and select real talents to prepare for the upcoming SEA Games, Asian Games (ASIAD), and Olympics.
In addition to the Olympic group, the competition program also includes 7 sports under the ASIAD system such as karate, wushu, sepak takraw, kurash, jujitsu, roller and esport.
In parallel, 18 sports belonging to the SEA Games and traditional national sports groups will also be held, including pencak silat, bodybuilding, muay, petanque, kick boxing, bowling, chess (chess, Chinese chess, Go), billiards & snooker, sports dancing, vovinam, diving, traditional martial arts, shuttlecock kicking, stick pushing, tug of war, pickleball and Lion - Lion - Dragon.
Spreading the spirit of national sports, preparing for the international arena
The National Sports Festival is not only a gathering place for the most elite athletes representing provinces, centrally-run cities, the military and police, but also a major political , cultural and social event that has a profound influence on the entire population.
Through the Congress, the sports industry will comprehensively evaluate the quality of mass sports movements and high achievements nationwide, and at the same time discover new talents for systematic training, serving further goals such as SEA Games 34 (2027), Olympics 2028 and ASIAD 2030.
The Congress also aims to raise social awareness of the role of sports in physical development, building healthy human resources, and being closely associated with the country's development.
Organizing in Ho Chi Minh City - a smart, modern and friendly city, along with Dong Nai and Dong Thap - dynamic localities, not only contributes to promoting the local image but also helps to utilize and promote the existing infrastructure system.
The host units are responsible for proactively preparing competition conditions according to the principles of economy and efficiency, avoiding scattered and wasteful investment. Propaganda activities before and during the Games will be associated with traditional education, promoting patriotism and solidarity, especially among youth, pupils and students.
With a professional approach, systematic organization and promotion of Olympic competitions, the 10th National Sports Festival in 2026 is expected to be a strong boost for the strategy of developing high-performance sports, gradually affirming the position of Vietnamese sports on the international map.
