Mr. Nguyen Van Hoa (residing in Tuyen Binh commune) pumps water to prepare to sow 2.2 hectares of rice (OM18 variety). "I do it early to avoid heavy rains in late September and early October. I still choose OM18 variety, but this season I am a bit worried because the prices of fertilizers, pesticides, and labor are all high, and the output is still uncertain," Mr. Hoa confided.
Applying tray seedling transplanters to rice production helps reduce production costs and improve rice quality.
Not far away, Ms. Le Thi Phuong has been sowing for nearly 10 days. The young green rice fields are in the rooting and tillering stage. Ms. Phuong said: “This crop, I sowed 1.2 hectares, also choosing short-term varieties. Right now, the biggest concerns are leaf rollers and golden apple snails. I am closely monitoring but the rice is still weak, and the fertilizer price is too high, so I have to carefully consider each application. I hope the weather is favorable and prices are stable.”
Not only the people, but also the cooperatives are rushing to prepare for the new crop. Chairman of the Board of Directors of Tien Phong Agricultural Production and Service Cooperative (Vinh Hung Commune) Nguyen Van Tam said that this year, the cooperative has organized the production of nearly 100 hectares of Autumn-Winter rice, currently more than 40% of the land has been prepared, and some members are preparing to plant rice next week.
“We guide members to continue applying the alternate wetting and drying (AWD) technique, using high-yielding, high-quality varieties, and proactively preventing pests and diseases early. However, the current difficulty is that input material prices are still high, and no business has signed a contract to purchase output,” Mr. Tam added.
According to the Department of Agriculture, the agricultural sector is coordinating with localities to closely monitor the crop calendar and the situation of pests, and at the same time, recommending farmers to strictly follow the concentrated sowing schedule, avoid planthoppers, and not sow for a long time to avoid pest outbreaks. In addition, it is necessary to increase the application of water-saving farming models, apply fertilizers properly, and use short-term varieties with good resistance to pests and diseases to adapt to the weather.
Last week, the whole province sowed an additional 915 hectares, the total area of Autumn-Winter 2025 rice crop accumulated to July 15, 2025 was 28,909 hectares, mainly concentrated in the communes of Hau Thanh, Nhon Hoa Lap, Nhon Ninh, Tan Thanh, Khanh Hung, Tuyen Binh. However, the issue that farmers and cooperatives are most concerned about now is the price of agricultural products after harvest. In fact, the Summer-Autumn rice crop is being harvested with good yield but the price of rice has decreased sharply, only about 5,800-7,000 VND/kg, the profit is only about 6-10 million VND/ha, some households even suffer losses after deducting land rental and investment costs.
From that reality, the provincial Department of Agriculture is promoting the call for enterprises to join production - consumption linkage with cooperatives, gradually forming raw material areas associated with processing factories. At the same time, implementing high-quality, standard rice production models to increase opportunities to access domestic and export markets.
Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment Dinh Thi Phuong Khanh emphasized: “We identify the Autumn-Winter crop as a short-term but very important crop. However, if the crop calendar and pests are not well controlled or spontaneous production is not carried out, the risk is high. Therefore, the Department is directing localities to synchronously implement technical solutions, production organization and market, especially promoting the role of cooperatives.”./.
