13 power transmission towers broken during maintenance: Urgently collect and salvage broken cables at sea

On the afternoon of August 13, Mr. Nguyen Van Niem, Deputy Director of the Department of Industry and Trade of Vinh Long province, said that the construction unit of Thanh Hai 1 Wind Power Plant (Tan Hoan Cau Ben Tre Joint Stock Company) is urgently fixing the problem of 13 broken 22kV transmission line pillars connecting the plant.

Immediately after the cable break, the operator cordoned off the affected area, temporarily halted all boat traffic to ensure safety, and issued notices to nearby vehicles. Specialized fleets were deployed to collect and salvage the broken cable sections to avoid obstructing waterway traffic and preventing safety risks.

The Department of Industry and Trade of Vinh Long province requested the factory to urgently study and propose a plan to replace the surface cable system with underground cables, and report to the department before August 15. Once the technical plan is approved, the construction unit will proceed to salvage all broken centrifugal concrete pillars.

Authorities are urgently working to fix the problem.

Mr. Nguyen Van Niem said that surface cables have the advantage of low cost, saving 5-7 times compared to underground cables. However, in terms of operational safety, marine aesthetics and reducing risks due to waves or ship activities, the underground cable option is considered superior. "Although the initial investment cost is high, underground cables help reduce the risk of incidents, while protecting the landscape and marine environment," he emphasized.

Currently, Vinh Long province has 10 wind power plants in commercial operation, making an important contribution to the renewable energy supply of the Mekong Delta. The choice of above-ground or underground cables will be based on the technical, financial and terrain conditions of each project, but safety, durability and aesthetics are always top priorities.
