Volvo has just announced that it will stop producing the S90 luxury sedan in India, completely ending the low-slung vehicle line to focus on developing SUVs and electric vehicles, two segments that are growing strongly in this country. The S90 was once considered a symbol of Nordic sophistication and comfort, with elegant design, high-end interior, 250-horsepower 2.0L mild-hybrid engine and a series of amenities such as massage seats, Bowers & Wilkins sound, and air suspension.
However, under pressure from rivals such as the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and BMW 5-Series, which are constantly being upgraded, the S90 is gradually falling behind in both equipment and powertrain options.
Volvo has not launched any upgrades for the S90 since the 2021 facelift, priced at nearly $79,000 in India, leading to declining sales and an inability to compete in the premium sedan segment. Volvo India's new strategy focuses on SUVs, especially electric vehicles like the EX30, a compact crossover that will launch later this year, and the EX90, a flagship electric SUV expected to arrive in 2026. Meanwhile, in Vietnam, Volvo S90 is still officially distributed with two versions including Ultra (priced at 2.269 billion VND) and Plug-in Hybrid Ultra (priced at 2.75 billion VND), targeting customers who love luxurious, quiet but sophisticated sedans.
