The incident occurred at 11:30 p.m. on July 15 in the city of Makhachkala (Russia). MMA fighter Timur Khizriev was suddenly ambushed by two strangers right in front of his house. According to witnesses, at least 10 shots rang out in the quiet residential area, of which 5 hit Khizriev in the shoulder, chest, back and wrist.
Despite being seriously injured, the 28-year-old boxer managed to flee the scene. The attackers quickly got into a white Lada Priora and fled. Before leaving, they loudly insulted Khizriev and his family.
Local police are investigating, suspecting that the cause may stem from personal conflicts, conflicts within the sports world or involvement with gangs in Dagestan, a place famous as Russia's leading MMA "hotbed" but also prone to violence.
Khizriev underwent lengthy surgery shortly after being rushed to the hospital. The hospital confirmed that he was out of danger and recovering.
Timur Khizriev is one of the most prominent fighters in Russian MMA, with a record of 18 wins. He used to compete in Bellator and most recently won the PFL 2024 featherweight championship, receiving a bonus of 1 million USD . The incident shocked the international MMA community, many famous fighters sent their wishes for his speedy recovery.
