According to statistics from the Vietnam Securities Depository (VSD), the Vietnamese stock market recorded 190,852 new trading accounts opened in May.
The number of newly opened individual securities accounts remained high amid a strong market recovery after the correction in April. In just one month, the VN-Index increased by more than 92 points, equivalent to more than 7%.

Last month, domestic individual investors opened 190,634 additional trading accounts, bringing the total number of trading accounts of this group of investors to more than 10 million accounts, accounting for 99.3% of the entire market.
The number of domestic institutional investor accounts also increased by 44 accounts during the month, reaching a total of 18,173 accounts.
By the end of May, the number of domestic investor securities accounts exceeded 10 million accounts, the highest ever.
In the group of foreign investors, the number of newly opened securities trading accounts by individuals increased by 186 accounts while foreign institutional investors closed 12 accounts.
According to the Stock Market Development Strategy to 2030 approved at the end of 2023, Vietnam aims to reach 9 million investor securities trading accounts in the market by 2025 and 11 million accounts by 2030. However, the target by 2025 was completed 2 months early.
In the next 5 years, the Vietnamese market needs 1 million more accounts to exceed the 2030 target. With the current annual opening rate of millions of accounts, this target is likely to be achieved a few years early if the market does not record account purges like the period at the end of 2023.
