Why Leicester City hasn't fired Van Nistelrooy yet

In the context of being relegated from the Premier League and facing a challenging season in the Championship, Leicester City has not officially said goodbye to coach Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Van Nistelrooy does not know what his future at Leicester will be.

Van Nistelrooy, who took over from Steve Cooper in November, had a short but disastrous tenure: 17 defeats in 19 games, failing to score a single goal at home in nine consecutive games, losing all nine of them. The cold numbers tell the story of the former Manchester United striker's miserable days.

Under his leadership, Leicester lost all sense of identity - a team that had miraculously won the Premier League now languished like a shadow of its former self. The climax came on April 20, when they were officially kicked out of the top flight of English football, ending a chaotic season with disappointment spreading from the stands to the dressing room.

Although the British media, specifically Mail Sport , confirmed that Van Nistelrooy would leave the team last month, until now - a few weeks after the last match of the season - he is still considered the head coach in name only. This makes many people wonder: Why is Leicester so hesitant, especially when the time to prepare for the new season is passing by every day?

The answer, according to The Sun , lies not on the pitch but in the financial statements. Leicester are said to be waiting for the new accounting period to make it more “ economical ” to sack Van Nistelrooy – meaning they will save a significant amount of money in contract liquidation.

Van Nistelrooy anh 1

Van Nistelrooy cannot help Leicester City stay in the Premier League in the 2024/25 season.

Van Nistelrooy himself has expressed his desire to have his future decided soon. Speaking last month, he said: “I still hope to know soon. The sooner the better, for the good of the club. There are 70 people working at the training centre and everyone needs to plan for next season.”

But is there room for him in that plan? Probably not. Although it has not been officially announced, Leicester have clearly begun looking for a successor. One of the leading candidates is Sean Dyche, the veteran manager who kept Burnley in the top flight for several seasons and most recently managed Everton. Dyche has been free since being sacked by Everton in January, and with his pragmatic style and vast experience in the Championship, he could be the right man for a “back to earth” campaign.

Leicester now need not only a tactically skilled manager, but also one who can rebuild confidence, lift morale, and get the team back on track after the shock of relegation. After several seasons of flying high, the Midlands club are now forced to face reality: a return to the Premier League is no longer a given - it will be a difficult journey, and one that will require careful planning both in the boardroom and on the pitch.

If Van Nistelrooy was a failed gamble, his successor will be the gamble that will determine Leicester City's future for years to come. But first, everything is still... waiting for the accountant to nod.
