According to unofficial statistics from wedding organizers, the rate of wedding cancellations or postponements in 2024 increased by more than 30% compared to the previous year, and the main reason is... the price of gold. From the 65 million VND/tael mark at the end of 2023, gold has continuously increased and at one point exceeded the 85 million VND/tael mark in early 2025.
Meanwhile, according to custom, the groom's family usually has to prepare from 1 to 5 taels of gold on the wedding day as a dowry, not to mention gifts for the bride or the cost of wedding jewelry. For many middle-income families, this price is far beyond their financial capacity.
Many couples have had to postpone their weddings, waiting for the price of gold to cool down. For them, having a perfect wedding but having to borrow money and incur financial burden after the wedding is not worth it.
Ms. Hoang Thi Lan (27 years old, Binh Thanh) shared:
“We planned to hold our wedding in October 2024, but when we asked about the gold price to prepare the dowry, it was beyond our expectations. Both parents advised us to wait a little longer, hoping that next year the gold price will be more stable.”
Stories like Ms. Lan's are no longer rare, causing many wedding restaurants and wedding organizers to constantly adjust schedules, even losing revenue due to long-term contract delays.
To answer the question of whether the wedding service industry is affected when gold is increasing like this, we talked with Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Thien, founder & CEO of Naifood party booking company - a reputable wedding organizer in Ho Chi Minh City. Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Thien shared very realistically about the difficult situation of the wedding industry in recent times. Below are the notes from the conversation with him:
“From mid-2024 until now, the price of gold has increased so rapidly that many couples have had to reconsider their wedding plans,” Mr. Thien began.
“With the Vietnamese tradition of gold dowry, preparing 2-5 taels of gold as a wedding gift has now become a huge burden. There are many customers who signed contracts with Naifood but then proactively contacted to postpone the wedding, waiting until the end of 2025 or early 2026 when the price of gold may cool down before holding the wedding.”
According to Mr. Thien, the postponement of weddings not only affects the company's operating schedule but also entails a series of adjustments from personnel, logistics to finance. However, Naifood is still flexible in providing maximum support:
“We understand our customers’ psychology. Most of them have specific wedding plans, but when the cost exceeds their ability, it is understandable that they have to stop. Naifood does not charge any additional fees when customers want to postpone their wedding date and always creates maximum conditions so that they can rest assured to wait until a more suitable time.”
Mr. Thien also acknowledged this as a challenge but at the same time an opportunity for the wedding industry to restructure:
“We have started to offer economical, simple wedding packages that still have all the formalities. The trend of small weddings at home or in the garden is being chosen by many young couples. The important thing is the quality and emotions of the party, not the ostentation.”
At the end of the sharing session, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Thien emphasized:
“The increase in gold prices is an objective factor, but what is important is how the wedding industry and organizers like Naifood adapt to the situation. We always accompany our customers, even in the most difficult times.”
