In the first five months of the year, national authorities handled more than 40,000 cases of smuggling, counterfeiting, and poor-quality goods, with a total fine value of up to VND6,500 billion.
Notably, counterfeit goods in the food and pharmaceutical sectors directly affect people's health and lives...
Among the solutions to prevent counterfeit and fake goods, authenticating traceability is an inevitable trend in the digital economy and an important driving force for sustainable development of the national economy.
According to experts, with technology, tracing the origin of goods can be easily done to build a transparent, efficient and competitive digital economy.
However, Colonel Pham Minh Tien, Deputy Director of the National Data Center ( Ministry of Public Security ) said that currently, there are some dangers in tracing the origin of products.
That is the state of inconsistent identification codes nationally, not showing the supply chain, from raw materials, production to consumers.
Management agencies do not effectively control goods on e-commerce platforms; there is a lack of connectivity between traceability and quality control of goods; there is no centralized database to evaluate and control goods.
Enterprises are not required to participate in the product traceability system. Meanwhile, people do not have the tools to trace.

“From the perspective of state management of data, we see that the deployment of modern traceability platforms and the application of advanced technologies such as blockchain is an important solution to help improve management efficiency, ensure market safety and enhance transparency throughout the entire supply chain,” said Mr. Pham Minh Tien.
In particular, as Vietnam promotes international trade and exports, proving the origin, quality, and production process of products through a traceability system will help international partners feel secure.
According to Colonel Pham Minh Tien, Vietnamese enterprises and technology engineers have researched and developed traceability platforms that are suitable for the characteristics of the domestic market and meet the requirements of standardization and integration with the national data infrastructure. The National Data Center always supports and creates technical, legal and security conditions for these solutions to be most effective.
Application of goods tracing using blockchain technology
According to experts, tracing the origin of goods is the foundation for digital governance. Photo: NDA
According to experts, traceability of goods is the foundation for digital governance, digital policies and the development of an open data ecosystem, helping the Government to formulate effective policies, support innovative businesses, and increase people's trust in domestic products.
Traceability creates digital trust – an essential element for e-commerce, agricultural exports, smart logistics and modern supply chain management.
In particular, traceability helps provide accurate, continuous and multi-dimensional data from input to output, helping businesses manage risks, forecast production, coordinate logistics, and control quality better. This is also a tool to support comprehensive digital transformation in product production, distribution and consumption.
In the context of commercial fraud being a hot issue of the whole society, through traceability, consumers can quickly and transparently verify the origin of products, clearly distinguish fake, counterfeit and poor quality goods.
On a large scale, with a traceability system based on domestic technology (blockchain, digital identification, etc.), Vietnam can control domestic data, limit dependence on foreign platforms and maintain data sovereignty.

Introducing the identification and authentication platform, Mr. Nguyen Huy, Head of Technology Department of the National Data Association, said that NDA Trace is a system of identification - authentication - traceability to each specific product and goods.
Thanks to the application of the national blockchain platform (NDA Chain) and decentralized identification technology (NDA DID), each product is assigned a unique identification code, helping to transparently track the entire journey from production to consumers. All operations of subjects in the supply chain are recorded and authenticated, cannot be faked, cannot be edited.
Through the NDA Trace Portal, businesses can easily generate product identification information, called the NDA Trace UID code. The NDA Trace UID is attached to the product packaging in the form of a QR code or RFID chip, not only ensuring safety but also making it easy to authenticate the product through each stage.
NDA Trace UID meets GS1 international standards and is compatible with the EBSI TRACE4EU global authentication and traceability system, providing comprehensive support for businesses connecting cross-border supply chains: From production, import and export to domestic distribution and consumption.
The subjects in the supply chain, from the manufacturing plant, importer, inspection unit, warehouse to the stores, distribution channels, use NDATrace to scan the UID code on each product to authenticate the production, import, quality inspection, packaging, transportation and sales activities. All these authentication activities are fully recorded in the form of digital certificates (VC) throughout the product life cycle.
Users can easily scan the UID code to trace the origin of each product in a transparent, safe and efficient manner. In addition to tracing information, consumers can also confirm purchases, participate in membership point accumulation programs and customer care.

According to Mr. Bui Ba Chinh, Acting Director of the National Code and Barcode Center, National Committee for Standards, Metrology and Quality (Ministry of Science and Technology), the recent serious cases of counterfeit goods production and trading show that it is time to not ignore them but to tighten management using technology to avoid similar risks from happening.
Carrying out digital transformation means giving products a new look that is more modern, easier to connect, and most importantly, easier to verify, creating trust for consumers.
