Some developments related to the Russia-Ukraine war:

Ukraine forced to make concessions to Russia

Germany's Spiegel newspaper quoted a senior Kiev official as saying that in Ukraine, they have begun discussing a scenario to end the conflict, according to which Kiev will abandon its tough stance on taking back territories controlled by Russia.

According to the official, it would be impossible to end the conflict without making concessions to Moscow. He noted that the agreement would also benefit Russia.

No matter who becomes the next US president, Western support for Ukraine will decrease ,” said the senior Ukrainian official.

Ukraine is not capable of counterattacking

German newspaper Bild quoted sources as saying that the German Defense Ministry believes that Kiev will not be able to counterattack in the near future and that the German armed forces no longer have heavy military equipment to transfer to the Ukrainian armed forces.

The German Defense Ministry does not believe that Ukraine will be able to launch a counterattack soon. At the same time, the German side will no longer supply Ukraine with large-scale military equipment ,” Bild wrote.

According to internal documents of the German Ministry of Defense, the transfer has been completed, so Leopard 2 tanks will no longer be supplied to Kiev, although the German army still has nearly 300 such equipment. The same situation applies to infantry fighting vehicles and tank guns.

At the same time, the German newspaper called Chancellor Scholz's statement at a press conference with President Zelensky about billions of dollars in new aid to Ukraine worrying.

All the money and projects named by the Prime Minister were approved and funded last year ,” Bild noted.

Russia steps up counterattack in Kursk

According to the US-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW), Russia intensified its counterattack in Kursk on October 10 and 11 to try to push back Ukrainian forces before worsening weather conditions limited their ability to maneuver on the battlefield.

" The intensified Russian counterattacks may be aimed at pushing Ukrainian forces out of Kursk before bad weather conditions begin to limit combat operations on the front. Ukrainian officials have previously noted that the Russian military is stepping up offensive operations in Ukraine, especially mechanized attacks, to take advantage of dry roads and terrain before the rainy season softens the ground. At the same time, this Russian operation is aimed at retaking all of Kursk ," the ISW report said.

ISW predicts that Russian military commanders may fear that poor weather conditions in the fall of 2024 and early winter of 2024-2025 will encourage positional fighting in Kursk and give Kiev forces more time to better consolidate their positions.

NATO considers changing strategy with Russia

NATO defence ministers will meet in Brussels next week to review the strategy for relations with Russia that has been maintained by NATO for decades.

Although NATO-Russia relations “hit rock bottom” after the Ukraine conflict broke out in February 2022, the strategic relationship with Moscow is still maintained.

The 1997 strategy stated that Russia and NATO shared the common goal of “building a stable, peaceful and undivided Europe.” However, this document no longer reflects the current situation.

At its summit in Washington in July, NATO called Russia “the most significant and direct threat to the security of its allies.” Meanwhile, Russia continues to assert that NATO’s eastward expansion is an “existential danger” to it.
