In the Ukrainian capital, Chinese envoy Li Hui sought to promote Beijing-led peace talks to resolve the conflict. However, in a meeting with Mr Li, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba "stressed that Ukraine does not accept any proposals that involve the loss of territory or the freezing of the conflict".

He also stressed the importance of China's mediation role, especially regarding nuclear safety and the resumption of grain exports through the Black Sea.

The meeting came as the Turkish president announced a two-month extension of a United Nations-backed deal to allow the transport of Ukrainian grain across the Black Sea, which is crucial to securing supplies in the global grain market.

Li, the most senior Chinese diplomat to visit Ukraine since the conflict began in February 2022, arrived in Kiev on Tuesday, about three weeks after President Volodymyr Zelenskyy spoke by phone with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

He arrived for two days of talks with the Kiev government as part of a European tour aimed at promoting China's plan to resolve the conflict.

China said the purpose of the trip was to “communicate with all parties on the political solution to the Ukraine crisis”. President Xi Jinping also visited Moscow in March, hoping that China could act as a mediator between Russia and Ukraine.
