Highest high school graduation rate in 9 years

Báo Quảng NinhBáo Quảng Ninh27/07/2023

The rate of students recognized as graduating from high school this year is 98.88%, the highest since the exam began to be renewed in 2015.

The Department of Quality Management, Ministry of Education and Training said this figure was calculated preliminarily after the exam results were announced.

However, the Department said this is not the final rate because candidates can still submit applications to review their high school graduation exams until July 27. The review of graduation recognition will be completed by August 12 at the latest.

Compared to the previous three years, this year's high school graduation rate is the highest but the increase is not significant. Last year, the figure was 98.57%, in 2021 it was nearly 96.88% and in 2020 it was 98.34%.

This figure is also the highest since 2015, when the high school graduation exam began to be reformed.

Year High school graduation rate (%)
2015 91.58
2016 92.93
2017 97.42
2018 97.57
2019 94.06
2020 98.34
2021 98.6
2022 98.57
2023 98.88

In 2015, for the first time, the Ministry of Education and Training organized the national high school exam with two purposes: High school graduation and university and college admission (also known as the two-common exam). This was considered a breakthrough, combining two exams into one to reduce waste for society. However, the exam also caused many controversies such as multiple choice math tests, easy exam questions that created a "rain of 10s" in 2017, then suddenly too difficult, revealing a cheating scandal with hundreds of students having their scores raised in Ha Giang, Son La, Hoa Binh in 2018.

In 2020, when the revised Lawon Education came into effect, the national high school exam was renamed the high school graduation exam. With the main goal of considering graduation, the exam was designed to be easier.

This year, the country has more than one million candidates taking the high school graduation exam. The high passing rate was predicted in advance because the exam has a similar structure and content to recent years. Many provinces and cities have a graduation rate of over 99%, such as Binh Duong (99.76%), Son La (99.68%), Hoa Binh (99.61%), and Ca Mau (99.2%).
