In his opening speech, Vice Chairman of the Hanoi Elderly Association Pham Huy Giap said that the City People's Committee assigned the Hanoi Elderly Association to preside over the development and implementation of the topic "Promoting the role of the elderly in implementing a civilized and progressive lifestyle in Hanoi by 2025".
According to Mr. Pham Huy Giap, the construction and implementation of the project aims to replicate civilized, economical, and progressive funeral organization models; avoid formalities, ostentation, and waste; and at the same time increase the rate of cremation when someone passes away in the city.
Currently, the cremation rate in Hanoi is about 82%. However, there are still some localities that have not achieved the target set out in Program No. 08-CTr/TU of the Hanoi Party Committee.
Besides positive changes, reality shows that there are still some uncivilized manifestations in funeral organization.

At the conference, delegates discussed and analyzed the role and responsibility of the elderly in performing civilized funerals; shared effective models and methods; and proposed solutions to expand the civilized and progressive funeral movement, associated with emulation movements such as "Old age - bright example", "Building a cultural family", "Elegant and civilized Hanoians"...
Mr. Nguyen Duc Thin (Chairman of the Elderly Association No. 7, Thanh Liet Ward) said that it is necessary to strengthen extensive propaganda work among the people, especially promoting the exemplary role of the elderly in dealing with backward customs in funerals such as burning votive paper, using loud speakers, and prolonging funerals...
Commenting on the fact that there are still many families in difficult circumstances, and that organizing a long funeral is not only an economic burden, but also a mental and human resource burden, Mr. Pham Gia Nam (former Thanh Xuan Nam Elderly Association No. 2) proposed that local authorities proactively review single-parent households, and when there is a funeral, quickly send cadres to coordinate with mass organizations, including the elderly, to provide timely support.
Thinking that it is wasteful to have many funeral wreaths, Mr. Nguyen Trong Tieu (Elderly Association of Trang village, old Thanh Liet commune) proposed to limit the number of wreaths, wreaths should be made of silk flowers or paper for easy circulation and saving...

Concluding the discussion, Chairman of the Hanoi Elderly Association Nguyen The Toan stated that the discussion was very practical, especially promoting the important role of the elderly in participating in implementing civilized funerals; spreading the prestige, sense of responsibility and enthusiasm of the elderly in the community.
Highly appreciating the opinions of the elderly in Thanh Liet ward at the seminar, Mr. Nguyen The Toan emphasized that with practical experience, the enthusiastic opinions at the seminar will be the basis for the City Elderly Association to continue to build more specific, in-depth and practical topics.
Along with that, the local Elderly Association also needs to recommend the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee to have specific regulations on implementing civilized funerals, suitable for residential areas; continue to promote the core role of mobilizing and propagating children, relatives in the family and the community to implement civilized funerals, actively contributing to building a civilized lifestyle in Hanoi.
