According to British media, Antony - a Brazilian player currently playing for Manchester United - has agreed to reduce his current salary by up to 30% to continue his long-term commitment to Real Betis. However, this deal is facing a major obstacle due to the transfer fee that MU requires.
Antony is currently earning around £150,000 a week at Old Trafford, but is willing to take a cut to £100,000 a week to sign a long-term contract with Betis – the team he played for on loan for the second half of last season. This salary is still a significant figure for a club with a modest budget like Betis.
However, the biggest problem lies with MU, when the English team offered a transfer fee of up to 40 million euros (equivalent to 32.58 million pounds) to sell the Brazilian player. This is a figure that exceeds the ability of the La Liga representative to pay.
Betis sporting director Manu Fajardo admitted: "We have to admit that this is a complicated deal. But as long as Antony is not committed to any other team, we will do our best to be his choice."
"We will look to execute this deal in a creative way, but still ensure that it does not harm the financial sustainability of the club," Manu Fajardo stressed.
Antony had an impressive half-season at Betis, scoring 9 goals and providing 5 assists in 26 games, helping the team reach the UEFA Conference League final for the first time in their history. His performance was highly appreciated by experts, the team's management and fans.
It is understood that last week Antony rejected an offer from Serie A club Como, stating his desire to stay at Betis and await a decision from the Spanish side.
Antony's future remains a big question mark as Betis have yet to meet the fee demanded by MU, while the Brazilian himself does not want to return to a crowded squad at Old Trafford. The coming days will be crucial in determining whether he will continue to play for Betis or find a new destination in this summer's transfer window.
