The University of Waterloo - the leading prestigious university in Ontario (Canada) - is famous for its training programs in mathematics, computer science and engineering.
However, recently, this school surprised everyone when it launched a program called “Adulting 101”. This program teaches students basic life skills such as shopping, laundry, cooking, etc. According to the school, a part of the school’s students are seriously lacking in basic life skills.

Therefore, the University of Waterloo is implementing a program to promote the comprehensive development of students. Specifically, the program will teach students the necessary skills for independent living such as cooking, money management, laundry and how to go to the supermarket effectively without “forgetting things”...
These skills seem very simple, but in fact they are obstacles for many students when entering independent life.
Many students after participating in this program have shared that they have significantly improved their life skills and feel more confident when entering independent life in adulthood.
Faced with a generation of young people showing weakness in basic life skills, American psychology professor Jean Twenge, who teaches at San Diego State University (USA), commented: “Parents overprotect their children, causing the current generation of young people to be slow to develop basic life skills. Many children go to school far from home without having the necessary skills.”
Ms. Twenge advises parents to abandon the mindset of "doing everything for their children" and let their children participate in housework such as cooking, laundry, cleaning the house... from a young age.
Ms. Twenge - author of many books about generational differences - believes that the lack of basic life skills is causing young people to make mistakes and encounter many psychological problems in daily life.

In her 2017 book iGen , Twenge writes deeply about the current trend of “slow living,” where people are living longer, spending more years studying, and couples are having fewer children, later in life, but raising them with more care and setting very clear goals.
This parenting style often leaves children slower to develop personal independence than previous generations. This is reflected in the fact that many young people today have poorer life skills. They often live with their parents longer, leading to less responsibility for themselves because their parents do so much for them.
Ms. Twenge's biggest concern is the rising rate of depression and other mental health problems among young people today.
Ms. Twenge cited several studies that have shown that the lack of opportunities for children to experience life without parental supervision is the leading cause of increased levels of anxiety disorders and depression among young people today.
Lack of experience, lack of life skills, being overprotected by family for too long, makes young people confused when entering independent life, easily making mistakes, easily encountering psychological problems.
