The phone call took place a few days before Donald Trump's inauguration as US President.

During the phone call, Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed hope for a good start in relations with the United States.

"We both value mutual interaction (and) hope that China-US relations will have a good start in the new term of the US President," CCTV quoted Mr. Xi as saying.

After Chinese media reported on the phone call, President-elect Donald Trump said he and Xi Jinping would build a strong relationship.

"The call was very good for both China and the United States," AFP quoted Mr. Trump's statement on the social network Truth Social.

"I look forward to working on many issues together, starting immediately. We discussed trade balance, fentanyl, TikTok, and many other topics," Trump said.

"President Xi and I will do everything we can to help make the world a safer and more peaceful place," the US President-elect added.

CCTV reported that the phone call took place on the "afternoon of January 17". Earlier that day, CCTV said that Chinese Vice President Han Zheng would attend Mr. Trump's upcoming inauguration event on January 20 in Washington DC, at the invitation of the US side, according to Reuters.

In another development, the US Supreme Court ruled that the law passed by the US Congress to ban TikTok or transfer it to the US does not violate the First Amendment on freedom of speech of the US Constitution.

The ruling paves the way for the law to be officially implemented and TikTok to be banned on January 19 if there are no new developments.
