In 2021, seizing the opportunity when the locality implemented the policy of land concentration and accumulation, Mr. Dang Van Cuong and some colleagues established Thanh Nien Thanh Sen Cooperative, leasing 4.3 hectares of fallow land in the old Dong Mon ward (now Tran Phu ward) to test new production models. After a period of accumulating experience and developing the model, he realized that the Thai pear guava variety has great potential for development because it is relatively suitable for the local climate, has high economic efficiency and is convenient in applying organic farming processes.

To test the adaptability of this variety, Mr. Cuong tested planting 300 pear guava trees on a part of the cooperative's area. After more than a year of monitoring, the trees grew well, yielding fruits with uniform quality, beautiful appearance, and sweet taste. The initial success became the motivation for him and his colleagues to boldly cover the Thanh Nien Thanh Sen Cooperative's land of more than 3 hectares with nearly 2,000 trees by the end of 2024, applying production methods according to organic standards.

“Currently, the Thai pear guava growing model is developing well. This is not only a new direction but also my great expectation in transforming production on difficult land, creating truly sustainable value from clean agriculture ,” Mr. Cuong shared.

The guava garden is scientifically planned, planted in rows with a distance of 2 - 2.5m between trees, ensuring ventilation and convenience for care and harvesting. In particular, Mr. Cuong also intercropped with lemongrass - an easy-to-grow spice plant, with few pests and many benefits in organic farming. According to him, lemongrass essential oil contains active ingredients such as citronella and geraniol, which can effectively repel common pests such as fruit flies, thrips, mosquitoes, etc. without the need for pesticides, helping to ensure safety for crops and consumers. In addition, the dense foliage of lemongrass also has the effect of covering the soil, retaining moisture, limiting weed growth, and improving soil fertility.

In addition, guava trees are pruned periodically to create ventilation, limit pests and maintain healthy foliage. The entire care process strictly follows organic farming procedures; using microbial fertilizers and applying fruit wrapping techniques to protect the fruit throughout the development process.

Currently, about 300 guava trees of the cooperative have entered the stable harvest stage, with an average yield of 45 - 50 kg/tree/year, which can be harvested in many batches during the year. With a selling price of 30,000 - 35,000 VND/kg, each year brings in revenue of about 500 million VND. The model not only brings clear economic efficiency but also opens up a direction for clean, sustainable agricultural development right on the land that was abandoned many years ago.

Thanh Nien Thanh Sen Cooperative's Thai pear guava products are being consumed at many clean agricultural product stores in and outside the province. Not only conquering consumers thanks to their cleanliness and characteristic crunchy and sweet taste, the product also fully meets the technical standards in safe agricultural production. After achieving the certification of organic production areas according to Vietnam Organic Agriculture standards (TCVN 11041-2:2017), NHONHO Technology Company Limited is currently completing the dossier for Thai pear guava products to be granted organic certification in 2025.

According to Mr. Nguyen Phi Khanh - Standing Deputy Secretary of the Tran Phu Ward Party Committee, Mr. Dang Van Cuong is one of the typical young people, always pioneering in starting a business and enhancing the value of local agricultural products. The model of growing organic Thai guava in particular and vegetables and other valuable livestock at Thanh Sen Youth Cooperative has brought remarkable results, opening up prospects for developing urban agriculture associated with eco-tourism. The methodical approach of the Cooperative also contributes to diversifying clean products and promoting chain linkages in production - consumption.
