Impressively, after many years of investment, his family now has about 13 hectares of woody grape farms in Long Thanh and Thong Nhat districts. Not only does he sell fresh fruit of this unique specialty at a high price, he also invests in processing many unique products from woody grapes that are not only delicious but also have many nutritional values for health.
Domestication of exotic breeds
Nearly 20 years ago, Mr. Lu Sung Bat imported woody grape varieties from Taiwan for experimental planting. Seeing that the plants grew quickly and gave good yields, he has since continued to expand the area of woody grape planting.
Mr. Lu Sung Bat shared: "I love agriculture , so investing in an agricultural farm is an asset I want to leave to future generations because this crop not only has economic value and healthy food products, but is also good for the environment."
This passion is the driving force for him to persistently invest large amounts of capital to develop woody grapevine gardens, a crop that requires a very long-term investment. According to Mr. Lu Sung Bat, when grown from seeds, woody grapevines need 6-7 years to yield a harvest, but the plants grow sustainably and have a much longer lifespan than rootstocks. The older the plant, the higher the yield and better quality.
Tu Tung business establishment in Loc An commune, Long Thanh district is currently supplying the market with ornamental plants from woody grapes with prices ranging from several tens of millions of VND to hundreds of millions of VND per tree, contributing to increasing the economic value of this production model. |
Talking about the journey of domesticating this exotic plant variety in the urban area of Long Thanh airport, Mr. Lu Sung Bat recalled that the 13 hectares of woody grapevines his family invested in had many batches of woody grapes with different planting years. Among them, the first experimental trees he planted are now nearly 20 years old, some are over 10 years old, and some seedlings have been planted for several years but have not yet been harvested, or the new batch has been incubated to continue expanding the area. His farm self-propagated this specialty plant to continuously expand the area and sell seedlings to customers who want to grow this type of plant.
Mr. Lu Sung Bat said that woody grapes have the scientific name Jabuticaba, originating from South America. This exotic plant variety is currently grown in many different countries around the world, including Taiwan. However, this specialty variety that is not easy to grow is very suitable for the soil and climate conditions of Vietnam, especially in Long Thanh district. Specifically, in Taiwan, this tree only produces fruit 2 times a year, but when grown in Vietnam, it produces fruit all year round. Currently, woody grape varieties sold on the market also produce about 2 harvests per year. The grape variety at his family's farm is processed to produce 5-6 harvests per year, not only giving high yield but also the quality of the fruit is sweeter and more fragrant than in many other regions.

The impressive thing is that he does not grow grapes in the ground but completely in pots, in pots with clean organic soil mixed with sand and coconut fiber, creating ventilation and good drainage. According to Mr. Lu Sung Bat, taking care of woody grapevines requires meticulousness because they must be watered regularly, ensuring that the roots do not dry out, but the soil must be loose enough to drain quickly, otherwise the plant will grow slowly. Woody grapes have almost never had any disease outbreaks, so the farm does not use any chemicals, the nutrients provided to the plants are mainly organic fertilizers to ensure safety. He regularly brings fresh grapes for testing for safety and quality.
Diversified processed products
The fruit of woody grapes will grow directly on the trunk, flowers, and fruits grow from the roots. This fruit is considered one of the types containing many nutrients, including many substances that are good for human health.
Mr. Lu Sung Bat added that according to many published studies, woody grapes are rich in phenolic compounds, a substance that is very beneficial to human health. Analysis of the nutritional composition of woody grapes has about 50 calories of amino acids, rich in vitamin B and C groups and is also rich in anthocyanin...

Currently, Mr. Lu Sung Bat's family's woody grape farm is harvesting 15-20 tons of fresh fruit per year. In addition to selling fresh fruit in the garden for 250,000 VND/kg, he also invested in a cold storage warehouse, a processing area with many equipment to deeply process many specialties from woody grapes such as: vinegar, wine, grape juice, grape jam, dried grapes, woody grape jelly... Diners enjoy enjoying them not only because these are specialties but also because of their nutritional value and health benefits.
