Economic prospects from raising ants for eggs

Ant eggs are a specialty favored by many consumers, but people mainly exploit them naturally and are not productive. With the desire to bring new livelihoods to forest growers, the research project on raising ants for commercial eggs was implemented from the beginning of 2025 in two communes, Tan An (Van Ban) and Bao Ha (Bao Yen), with high applicability, promising to open up a new direction for economic development for local people.

With nearly 4 hectares of forest, canopy and climate suitable for the development of egg-laying ants, when he learned about the research project on egg-laying ants being implemented in the area, Mr. Pham Quang Soai in Ba Xa village, Tan An commune, Van Ban district registered to pilot 400 egg-laying ant nests on his family's forestry area. Up to now, the ant nests have developed well, reaching the required size.

Mr. Pham Quang Soai said: In the past, when the ant egg season came in the third lunar month every year, my family often went to the forest to collect natural nests for food, to prepare dishes, and even people called to order them right away. I thought that if I could collect a lot of ant eggs to sell on the market, I would have a stable income. When I heard about the scientific research project on raising ants for commercial eggs being implemented in the commune, I boldly registered.

Mr. Pham Quang Soai also shared that raising ants for eggs does not require much technique or care. In addition, with the close supervision and guidance of the project leader - a person with passion and experience in this field, only needing a forest area like his family's can easily implement the model.

Not having a large forest area like Mr. Pham Quang Soai, after consulting and knowing that raising ants for eggs can completely take advantage of the family's fruit tree area to implement, Mr. Nguyen Van Kien, Khoai 3 village, Bao Ha commune, Bao Yen district boldly registered to test raising ants for eggs with 200 nests. The ant nests were hung by Mr. Kien on jackfruit, guava, and mango trees. What is special is that since raising ants, the fruit trees in the garden have had fewer pests and diseases because ants are natural enemies of pests and diseases.

Mr. Nguyen Van Kien said: The model of raising ants for eggs brings double benefits to farmers, both bringing economic value, creating additional income on the available fruit tree area in the garden, and effectively preventing pests and diseases for crops.

The scientific project "Research on breeding some species of ants under the forest canopy to create concentrated ant egg products of good quality" was implemented by the Department of Science and Technology in coordination with the Forest Protection Research Center (Vietnam Forestry Science Institute) from the beginning of 2025 to create livelihoods, contributing to increasing income for people growing forestry trees, while raising awareness of forest protection in the community. 800 ant nests were raised from the ants living in the local forest canopy, then installed on the branches of forestry trees and fruit trees. Each quality ant nest can yield 500 - 700 grams of ant eggs, promising to bring a stable additional income for farmers. In addition, farmers do not need to invest a lot of capital, do not spend much time taking care of them, and can take advantage of the canopy of forestry trees and fruit trees of their families.

Mr. Nguyen Minh Chi, Head of the Department of Pest Control, Forest Protection Research Center said: After evaluating the ideal conditions, we decided to deploy the model in Bao Yen and Van Ban districts. The goal is to build a proactive and concentrated ant farming technique, providing a source of commercial ant eggs, contributing to limiting the collection of natural ant eggs that affect the forest. The Forest Protection Research Center always accompanies and provides technical support to local farmers.

Research on breeding some species of ants under the forest canopy, although still in the experimental stage, has attracted the attention of local people because of its high applicability. The model promises to open a new direction for economic development for people in forestry areas.
