Editor-in-Chief of Hanoi Moi Newspaper Nguyen Minh Duc: History is the luggage, challenges are the driving force of Hanoi Moi in the new period

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Vietnam Revolutionary Press Day, Hanoi Moi Newspaper reporter had a conversation with Party Secretary and Editor-in-Chief of Hanoi Moi Newspaper Nguyen Minh Duc about the glorious 68-year journey of Hanoi Moi Newspaper and the strategic orientations for the future of the newspaper honored to be named twice by Uncle Ho.

Affirming a prestigious voice in the hearts of readers

- In the 100-year history of Vietnam's Revolutionary Press, Hanoi Moi Newspaper has 68 years of establishment and development. What do you think about the name Hanoi Moi in that glorious historical flow?

- For nearly 68 years, since the publication of the first daily issue on October 24, 1957, Hanoi Moi Newspaper has always been proud to be one of the main press agencies of the Capital, constantly contributing to the flow of Vietnamese revolutionary journalism. Right from the first days of its establishment, the Newspaper has clearly defined its mission as the voice of the Party Committee, government and people of Hanoi, and at the same time a trusted forum for readers.

The newspaper has fulfilled that mission well, building a Party newspaper agency with a rich tradition and many glorious achievements. Generations of cadres and journalists of Hanoi Moi in the past and today have shown their qualities and talents, creating a reputation. The newspaper has not only excellently fulfilled its political tasks, but also affirmed its position, role and prestigious voice in the hearts of readers in the capital and the whole country. This is an invaluable asset, a baggage that Hanoi Moi Newspaper must cherish, preserve and continue to promote.

- This is also the time when the press in general and Hanoi Moi Newspaper in particular are facing great difficulties and challenges such as the reorganization of press agencies and the profound impact of the digital age. How does Hanoi Moi Newspaper view these issues and what solutions does it have to promptly adapt?

- Yes, these are great difficulties and challenges, but they are also opportunities for innovation and growth. Regarding the arrangement and streamlining of the apparatus, the Party Committee and the Editorial Board of the Newspaper have strictly implemented the directions and instructions of the Central and City Party Committees. We believe that, with the attention of the Central and the City, Hanoi Moi Newspaper and the press nationwide will establish a new model of "streamlining - compactness - strength - efficiency - effectiveness - efficiency", both fulfilling political tasks well and ensuring long-term stability and improving the lives of workers.

As for the challenges in the digital age, as we all know, modern journalism is witnessing a strong transformation with prominent trends such as: Digital journalism, data journalism or intelligent journalism (or smart journalism) thanks to the application of artificial intelligence (AI)...

In that context, Hanoi Moi Newspaper determines to be proactive, determined to innovate, and absolutely not willing to fall behind. We also understand that innovation is a regular, continuous and very difficult process. In addition to our own efforts, Hanoi Moi Newspaper hopes to receive attention, support and facilitation from central agencies and Hanoi City, especially in terms of mechanisms and policies, first of all, in conjunction with the arrangement of the apparatus and shaping a suitable organizational model; especially ensuring the press economy , along with mechanisms such as ordering, increasing newspaper prices to offset printing costs and increased paper prices, investing in facilities, etc.

Human-centered innovation

- As the Editor-in-Chief has affirmed, we must be proactive and determined to innovate. So what plans do the Party Committee and the Editorial Board of the newspaper have to develop the team of journalists working for Hanoi Moi?

- The viewpoint of the Party Committee and the Editorial Board is that innovation must be people-centered. In the coming time, the Newspaper will direct the strong implementation of digital technology and AI applications in its operations, along with strengthening training and improving qualifications, ensuring standardization according to job positions.

Even the distribution department, which seems to have little to do with this trend, has recently officially put the Hanoi Moi Newspaper distribution management software into operation. So there is no reason why other important departments, especially in terms of content, should not move and innovate.

- So, what must Hanoi Moi journalists do to meet the requirements of the new period?

- The central factor of innovation and also the decisive factor for success in innovation is the solidarity, unity, consensus, and efforts of the entire team of Hanoi Moi journalists.

I believe that each cadre, reporter, editor, and staff of Hanoi Moi Newspaper must first of all deeply understand the glorious mission of “Journalists are also revolutionary soldiers” of Vietnamese revolutionary journalists as taught by Uncle Ho; especially need to understand the proud historical tradition and value of the Hanoi Moi brand, the only Party newspaper in the country named by Uncle Ho twice, the first Party newspaper agency in the country to be awarded the title of Labor Hero with 68 years of glorious history. From there, let us together arouse pride, the desire to contribute and to live and work in a way that is worthy of the name Hanoi Moi.

We are confident that each Hanoi Moi journalist will become a “cell” contributing to building solidarity, sharing together, overcoming difficulties and obstacles to build a common home of Hanoi Moi that is increasingly developing. Each comrade needs to strive for personal development, actively study, practice, improve political qualities, professional expertise, especially professional ethics. We must continue to innovate journalism thinking, processes, and methods of information processing in a modern direction, take the lead in accessing advanced science and technology, new means, new ways of journalism, be ready to apply AI, use Big Data, catch “trends”, do “SEO”, speed up together to be faster, work together to be better, more beautiful, more attractive, more valuable...

- Looking to the future, can you share the vision and major goals that Hanoi Moi Newspaper sets for the next stage?

- Regarding vision, Hanoi Moi Newspaper will strive to maintain and promote its role as the key press agency of Hanoi City; become a model of exemplary, professional, humane, and modern journalism; have increasingly profound prestige and influence, and make an important and practical contribution to the successful implementation of the political tasks of the Capital and the country in the new era.

Regarding the goal, Hanoi Moi Newspaper will focus on innovation and strong development based on three main pillars: Comprehensive digital transformation, strengthening the press economy and improving the quality of human resources. With the goal of digital transformation, the Newspaper will build a streamlined and converged editorial office model; innovate the content production process, optimize and integrate multiple platforms to create diverse publications. The goal is to reach readers anytime, anywhere with rich and attractive content.

The newspaper economy will be boosted through diversifying revenue sources. Along with traditional advertising, organizing large-scale media programs and events; developing online advertising or establishing strategic partnerships with large enterprises are top priorities.

Regarding human resources, the Newspaper will focus on building a team of multimedia reporters capable of working flexibly on many platforms; promoting the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in the work process to improve productivity and labor quality... This ensures that the Hanoi Moi journalism team integrates with modern journalism trends and maintains its position as one of the leading Party newspapers in the country.
