University building covered with flowers

Da Nang Balconies in buildings on FPT University campus are ablaze with pink, orange, red, and white when four-year-old bougainvillea bushes come into season.

Amidst the green campus, the white 5-storey buildings stand out with their balconies extending outwards covered with colourful bougainvillea. In early summer, when the flowers are in full bloom, this place becomes a favourite photo spot for students and young people outside the school.

According to Ms. Truong Thi Ngoc Thach, head of the administrative department, the buildings in the school with bougainvillea balconies and shaded by green trees originated from the idea of Dr. Le Truong Tung, Chairman of FPT University, about planting trees in the forest style, applying the formula of 200 shade trees per hectare. The purpose of this is to green the entire campus, bringing vitality to teachers, staff and students.

Bougainvillea was planted as soon as the two main Gama and Beta buildings were completed in 2019. As a lover of plants, when assigned to be in charge of this area, Ms. Thach was excited to learn. "I and the administrative staff searched for documents, learned about tree planting and soil improvement models from tree experts and colleagues across the country," Ms. Thach said.

She explained that she chose to cover the balconies of the two buildings with bougainvillea because this is a sun-loving, drought-resistant plant, suitable for the sunny and windy Central region. Each building has about 160 pots, with 240 plants.

The care of the bougainvillea bushes and trees in the school grounds is currently being taken care of by a unit. The bougainvillea is watered twice a week; fertilized with NPK fertilizer, cow manure, and duckweed from the pond, during and after budding to keep the flowers blooming longer. In the past two years, the flower pots have begun to produce many flowers. The flowers bloom all year round but are most brilliant in late spring and early summer. During the rainy season in October and November, there are few flowers, mostly leaves and branches.

The campus has been greened nearly 2/3 of the campus area and has 1,000 shade trees such as Taiwan banyan, banyan, purple lagerstroemia, Osaka, lim xet or fruit trees such as mango, jackfruit, and coc. With the method of planting natural trees, the campus becomes lively and close. In addition to trees and flowers, around the school there are also three ponds with lotus and duckweed.

This is the second year the trees have bloomed brilliantly on campus. Nguyen Quang Hoang, a student of Business Administration, said he loves it and often takes pictures of buildings covered in flowers.

"In Da Nang, there are few schools with green spaces, the area is mainly for buildings. I am proud of the school and love and attach myself to this place more," Hoang said.

Tran Vu Hong An, K16 Hotel Management major, said that bougainvillea and architectural style are the school’s characteristics. The final year female student was impressed with the green potted plants planted along the corridors, walkways and balconies, creating a harmonious and friendly whole.

"My friends who come to visit or pass by my school all praise and admire it. This is truly the learning environment I dream of," An shared.

FPT Campus Da Nang was built in early 2018, with an area of over 5 hectares. The school currently has nearly 5,000 students.
