In the summer of 2017, the two classmates said goodbye to Nguyen Huu Canh High School (An Giang) to go to new schools. Khang studied law, then volunteered to join the army, was given the opportunity to continue studying and became a naval officer. Nguyen Thai Hai Duong studied Japanese, graduated and worked as an interpreter for FPT Corporation in Ho Chi Minh City. In September 2023, they met by chance at a coffee shop in their hometown. From that day, their feelings blossomed through text messages.

At the end of 2023, during the Battalion's live-fire exercise, Gia Khang made a "deal" with Hai Duong: If Khang achieved high results in shooting, she would agree to be his girlfriend. And Khang did it. That night, Khang excitedly "reported his achievements" to Hai Duong and received a nod of agreement from her. November 19 became the anniversary of the young couple's love.

Since falling in love with the navy soldier, Hai Duong has become more understanding and sympathetic to the hardships he has gone through. She admires the nights Khang and his teammates spend on duty to prevent illegal entry and exit at Vinh Xuong International Border Gate (An Giang), Thuong Phuoc (Dong Thap), and especially the love he has for his family. As the eldest son in a farming family, Khang spends most of his salary to support his younger sister in college in the city.

At the southwestern border of the Fatherland, the young political commissar always looked to Ho Chi Minh City, where there was a simple, optimistic, and strong-willed girlfriend who lost her father at a young age but still strongly rose up. In a long-distance relationship, the time together was short, the only love keepsake was a pair of fountain pens made from bullet casings engraved with the names of the two people, rustic, simple but full of treasure.

When asked about the sad memory, Hai Duong smiled lightly, that was the time Gia Khang missed the date on their one year anniversary because he had to take on an unexpected mission. She was sad, but she didn't blame him, she loved him even more.

They have a promise: In 2028, when Hai Duong transfers to Can Tho, Khang's sister graduates from university, Khang strives to be promoted to Captain, both will hold hands and receive the blessings of family, friends, and teammates.
