Tien Giang is a purely agricultural province with a low starting point when it began implementing the National Target Program on New Rural Development. Despite many difficulties and challenges, with unity, the Party Committee, government and people of Tien Giang province have completed the task of building a new rural area.

After more than 15 years of implementing the National Target Program on New Rural Construction, Tien Giang province has achieved comprehensive results, contributing to profoundly changing the face of rural areas and improving people's lives.
By the end of 2024, Tien Giang province will have 135/135 communes meeting the NTM standards, achieving 100% of the commune-level targets. The whole province has 68 communes meeting the advanced NTM standards (accounting for 50.37%), 14 communes meeting the model NTM standards (accounting for 10.37%). The whole province has 8/8 districts, along with 3 city and town-level units (including My Tho City, Go Cong City and Cai Lay Town) that have completed the task of building NTM, of which 2 districts meeting the advanced NTM standards are Cho Gao and Go Cong Dong. In particular, the criteria on transportation, income, poverty reduction, economic development and effective production models have been implemented synchronously, bringing clear results.
Right from the first years of implementation, Tien Giang has identified infrastructure, especially rural transport, as one of the core factors to promote socio-economic development. By 2024, 100% of communes in the province have met the Transport criteria - a figure that demonstrates the tireless efforts of the local government and people. The Income criterion has also recorded remarkable progress. In 2010, the province's average income per capita was only about 18.7 million VND/year.
After many years of restructuring agricultural production, developing agricultural value chains, applying science and technology and promoting exports, by 2024, the average income of Tien Giang people has increased to 76.4 million VND/year - the highest in the Mekong Delta region.
In addition, the poverty rate has decreased sharply from 10.96% (in 2010) to 0.79% by the end of 2024. This is the result of due attention to social security, full implementation of housing support policies, vocational training, preferential loans, along with the implementation of many effective and sustainable poverty reduction models, suitable for each residential area.
The province's rural economy has also recorded a strong change. The economic structure has clearly shifted with the proportion of industry - construction reaching 27.7%, services reaching 35.3% and agriculture - forestry - fishery remaining 37.1%. Export turnover in 2024 will reach 6.5 billion USD, ranking second in the region.
Many large enterprises have invested in the agricultural processing sector, helping to increase the added value of local agricultural products. Total social investment capital in 2024 will reach over VND 51,000 billion - a stable growth rate, demonstrating investors' confidence in the rural potential of Tien Giang.
At the ceremony to announce the Prime Minister's Decision recognizing Tien Giang province as having completed the task of building a new rural area, comrade Nguyen Van Vinh, Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee and Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee, said that Tien Giang is very honored and proud to be one of the three provinces nationwide to be recognized by the Prime Minister as having completed the task of building a new rural area according to the standards for the period 2021 - 2025 and one of the eight provinces nationwide to be recognized as having completed the task of building a new rural area.
This result is a mark, a milestone recognizing the great contributions, determination, efforts and achievements that the Party Committee, government and people of Tien Giang province have strived for in implementing the National Target Program on New Rural Construction before arranging administrative units to implement the 2-level local government model.
CONTINUE BUILDING NORTHERN COUNTRYSIDE
The achievements of building new rural areas in Tien Giang province have been recognized by the Central Government and the atmosphere of building new rural areas in the province continues to be vibrant. From the end of May to the present, in Tien Giang province, advanced new rural communes and model new rural communes have been continuously launched.

In particular, the communes continue to improve the achieved criteria and promote the achievements in building new rural areas that have been achieved before, such as Thanh Hoa model new rural commune, Cai Lay town. The commune has achieved the regulations on model new rural communes, notably the average income per capita/year reached over 83 million VND, an increase of 22,938 million VND compared to 2021; the multidimensional poverty rate decreased to 1.88%, a decrease of 0.24% compared to 2021. The commune has a smart hamlet model in Thanh Hiep hamlet. In addition, the commune also has outstanding achievements in the fields of environment and digital transformation.
According to Chairman of Cai Lay Town People's Committee Tran Van Thuc, in 2021, Thanh Hoa commune was recognized by the Provincial People's Committee as a commune that met advanced NTM standards. After nearly 4 years of consolidating and improving the quality of advanced NTM criteria, Thanh Hoa commune has many favorable conditions to strive to meet the model NTM standards; therefore, at the end of 2024, the Town Party Committee - People's Committee selected Thanh Hoa commune to strive to build a model NTM in 2025 and to date, the commune has launched a model NTM commune.
Similarly, the people of Thanh My commune of Tan Phuoc district are also living in joy these days when their commune was recognized as meeting the advanced NTM standards. After a period of striving and making efforts, in 2021, Thanh My was recognized by the Provincial People's Committee as meeting the NTM standards. Not stopping at that result, after 4 years of maintaining and continuing to improve the criteria, Thanh My has now been recognized by the Tien Giang Provincial People's Committee as meeting the advanced NTM standards, this is a great honor for the Party Committee and people of Thanh My commune.
Mr. Nguyen Thanh Tung (My Thien hamlet, Thanh My commune) shared: "The recognition of my commune as an advanced NTM is not only my personal joy and pride, but also the common joy of the people of Thanh My commune.
Building a successful advanced NTM commune is difficult, but maintaining and improving the quality of the advanced NTM criteria is even more difficult. I will continue to work together with the people in the commune and the leaders at all levels, the Party Committee, and the government of Thanh My commune to make a united effort and determination to improve the quality and maintain the title that our commune has achieved today."
Talking about the orientations for building new rural areas in the coming time, comrade Nguyen Van Vinh said that Party committees at all levels, authorities, the Fatherland Front and socio-political organizations continue to promote propaganda work, create consensus among the people on the meaning, importance, content, tasks, and methods of organizing and implementing the program, avoid complacency with the achieved results and continue to have plans and solutions to improve the quality of criteria, strive to build advanced new rural areas and model new rural areas in the coming time associated with the characteristics of each locality, taking agriculture as the foundation, people as the center, and enterprises as the driving force.
The province continues to effectively implement the Project on Restructuring the Agricultural Sector towards increasing added value; building concentrated raw material areas that meet quality management standards, associated with intellectual property protection.
Along with that, continue to implement the OCOP Program associated with key products, typical local products according to the value chain, combined with attracting investment, developing tourism; consider this as one of the key solutions to develop the agricultural and rural economy, and increase income for people.
Localities and sectors continue to apply science and technology, digital transformation in building new rural areas from state management to production, consumption of agricultural products and public services in rural areas; strengthen value chain linkages, develop cooperative economy, form concentrated production areas linked to markets and exports, especially key products of each locality; link building new rural areas with the goal of green - ecological - circular development, adapting to climate change, especially in areas regularly affected by drought and saltwater intrusion.
At the same time, strengthen the application of science and technology, promote innovation and accelerate digital transformation in rural economic development, build new rural areas and sustainably reduce poverty. Along with that, develop rural culture - health - education evenly, improve the quality of social security, ensure social order and safety, towards the goal of building "livable rural areas"; promote the role of the people, improve the capacity of grassroots authorities; effectively carry out rural environmental protection, actively improve the environmental landscape, develop bright - green - clean - beautiful models, combine new rural construction with community tourism development, promote traditional cultural values.
