On average, every day, Tot Hoa Ornamental Flower Seedling Facility (Chau Thanh district, Tien Giang province) sells several hundred coconut seedlings. |
According to records, the price of dried coconut and fresh coconut is still high at this time. Although this price has decreased slightly compared to more than half a month ago, it is still an attractive price for farmers. Given the value that coconut trees are bringing, some farmers have decided to switch to coconut cultivation or intercrop in vacant land. Due to the high demand for coconut seedlings, the price has also increased.
Mr. Nguyen Van Hung's family (Dong Thanh commune, Go Cong Tay district, Tien Giang province) has just destroyed nearly 2 hectares of red-fleshed dragon fruit due to consecutive harvests and selling them at low prices. After destroying the dragon fruit, Mr. Hung plans to grow coconut trees for drinking water.
Mr. Hung said: “Seeing that many people growing coconuts for drinking water are selling at high prices, I just destroyed my dragon fruit garden to switch to growing coconuts. But these past few days, I have been looking for places that sell coconut seedlings but the prices are too high and the quantity is not much, so I have to wait.”
Ms. Nguyen Huu Diem Huyen, leader of Tot Hoa Ornamental Flower Seed Company Limited (Chau Thanh district, Tien Giang province) said that this year, due to high coconut prices, people have planted more coconuts than in previous years.
“This year, small coconut seedlings (dwarf green Siamese, Malaysian red) cost 50,000 VND/tree, large ones 60,000 VND/tree. At this time last year, coconut seedlings were only priced at 30,000 - 35,000 VND/tree. Although this year, coconut seedlings are expensive, people are still buying a lot. Due to the high demand, the facility has difficulty collecting coconut seedlings from familiar sources for sale, due to shortages. Thanks to selling products with good origin and quality, many people come to Tot Hoa Ornamental Flower Seed Facility to buy a lot of coconut seedlings. On average, the facility sells a few hundred coconut seedlings per day,” Ms. Huyen added.
According to statistics, Tien Giang is the province with the largest coconut growing area in the Mekong Delta region with more than 21,650 hectares. In recent years, the province has had many preferential mechanisms and new ways to help promote coconut growing and processing activities in the province.
In particular, recently, fresh coconut products have been approved for official import by China, so the consumption situation is favorable. Therefore, farmers can sell at a good price, bringing in a fairly high income from coconut trees.
