The Telegraph reported that when meeting in London on March 20, European military planners discussed plans to deploy British Typhoon fighter jets to Ukraine to provide air support for the Ukrainian army and monitor a ceasefire that Russia and Ukraine could reach in the near future.

A senior RAF source said the issue was being discussed because if Britain decided to deploy ground peacekeepers in Ukraine, this would require air cover to ensure their safety.

“We would never send British troops into combat without air cover,” the British official said, adding that the British military could provide both Typhoon and F-35 fighter jets for the mission of patrolling the skies over Ukraine.

Uncertainty over whether the US would join the air support mission for Ukraine forced Britain to take the lead.

So far, US President Donald Trump has hinted that the US will not provide any military support and called on Europe to step up its support for Ukraine.

Prime Minister Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron are leading the formation of a "coalition of the willing" that would help defend Ukraine "on land, sea and air" in the event of a peace deal with Russia.

Both leaders said they were ready to deploy peacekeeping forces to Ukraine after a ceasefire between Kiev and Moscow.
