Thuy Linh shows her class, entering the round of 16 of the world championship for the first time

(Dan Tri) - Vietnam's No. 1 tennis player Nguyen Thuy Linh successfully avenged her defeat against Kirsty Gilmour with a convincing 2-0 win and entered the round of 16 of the 2025 World Badminton Championships in Paris (France).

Thuy Linh was defeated by Kirsty Gilmour in the round of 16 of the 2024 Indonesia Open. However, when meeting the Scottish player again in the second round of the 2025 Badminton World Championship on the evening of August 27, Thuy Linh had a completely different performance to quickly win after 2 sets.

In the first set, both players fought for every point right from the start. When the score was 13-12 in favor of Kirsty Gilmour, Thuy Linh suddenly exploded, scoring 5 consecutive points to lead 17-13. The score difference helped Thuy Linh dominate the game and win the set 21-17.

In the second set, Thuy Linh continued to have a favorable start when she took the lead 7-3. However, the Scottish player played with great effort and equalized the score 10-10 and created a fierce competition afterwards. Thuy Linh took the advantage when she took the lead 20-19 but could not finish the game and let Kirsty Gilmour take the lead 21-20.

At the decisive moment, Vietnam's number one tennis player showed his mettle by scoring 3 consecutive points to win 23-21, thereby winning 2-0 overall and registering his name in the third round, which is also the round of 16 at the world championship.

Thuy Linh's opponent in this round will be the fourth seed Chen Yufei. The Chinese tennis player is a former world number one, having won the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Gold Medal and the 2025 Asian Championship Gold Medal. The Vietnamese number one tennis player had faced Chen Yufei at the 2024 British Open and was defeated 0-2 in the first round.

Notably, this is the first time Thuy Linh has qualified for the round of 16 of the world championship and is currently the only representative of the Vietnamese delegation remaining in the tournament.

On the evening of August 27, Vu Thi Trang lost to Gao Fangjie with a score of 0-2 (17-21, 18-21) and stopped in the second round. The pair Dinh Hoang - Dinh Manh also lost 5-21, 18-21 to opponents Lee Jhe Huei - Yang Po Hsuan of Taiwan (China) and said goodbye to the tournament.
