Vietnam – US Reciprocal Trade: Towards an Agreement That Suits Both Sides’ Interests

US trade officials have affirmed the US's desire and determination to negotiate with Vietnam towards an agreement that suits the interests of both countries.

According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade , within the framework of negotiations on a bilateral agreement on reciprocal trade between Vietnam and the United States, on the evening of June 19 (Vietnam time), Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien had a negotiation session simultaneously with US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer online.

The negotiation session took place in an open, goodwill and constructive atmosphere. The ministers spent time discussing solutions and directions for handling the main outstanding issues in the negotiations between the two countries.

Minister Nguyen Hong Dien welcomed the proposals made by Minister Lutnick and Ambassador Greer to promote the negotiation process.

The Minister continued to propose that the United States consider areas of interest to Vietnam, including reciprocal tax policies and market access for some of Vietnam's key export groups.

In addition, the Minister emphasized Vietnam's view on wanting to work with the United States to develop harmonious, practical rules of origin that are suitable to the characteristics of the global supply chain, ensuring non-discrimination and creating favorable conditions for businesses of the two countries.

Minister Lutnick and Ambassador Greer appreciated Vietnam's efforts and goodwill in handling issues of concern to the United States, and believed that these would help the United States consider a reciprocal tax policy appropriate to Vietnam's specific conditions and circumstances.

Both Secretary of Commerce Lutnick and Ambassador Greer affirmed the United States' desire and determination to negotiate with Vietnam towards an agreement that suits the interests of both countries.

Ambassador Greer said that the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) will soon complete and send back to Vietnam the necessary documents so that the two sides can focus on discussions towards results that are in line with the interests of Vietnam and the United States.
