Losing to PSG is the end for Messi?

If we count at club level, the Argentine superstar may have played his last match in one of the world's most prestigious tournaments.

Messi and teammates were crushed by PSG. In the early morning of June 30, PSG crushed Inter Miami 4-0 in the round of 16 of the FIFA Club World Cup 2025™.

Lionel Messi has almost no chance of playing in another world- class club tournament, after Inter Miami suffered a heavy 0-4 defeat against Paris Saint-Germain in the round of 16 of the FIFA Club World Cup 2025™.

At 38, Messi no longer thinks about returning to Europe to play, which means that the possibility of him participating in the Champions League or any tournament in the top 5 of the old continent is unlikely. Messi's contract with Inter Miami will expire at the end of 2025, and his future is still a big question mark.

If he stays in Miami, Leo will only be able to continue to shine in MLS and some CONCACAF regional tournaments. The next FIFA Club World Cup will take place in 4 years (2029). And by that time, Messi will probably have retired.

Many of Messi's teammates, including Nicolas Otamendi and Luis Suárez, believe he will continue playing at Inter Miami, in preparation for the 2026 World Cup. Many believe that the 2026 World Cup is Leo's last major tournament.

However, Spanish journalist Guillem Balague, author of the book about Messi in 2023, revealed to BBC Sport: "No one knows about Leo's future, not even himself."

Balague said Messi's family is stable in Miami, and he is also negotiating a contract extension with Inter Miami. However, Leo just wants to focus on each match, each tournament.

Messi has not given any clear indication about his future. Even the former Barcelona star himself is not sure whether he will participate in the 2026 World Cup or not.

If he stays at Inter Miami, Messi's matches may be limited to North America. Unless Messi returns to Europe or South America, he will have the opportunity to participate in bigger tournaments. However, this is unlikely.
