The model of growing pink plum and peach in nets helps Mr. Tran Van Ut's family become prosperous.
Many years ago, Mr. Ut's family cultivated rice on 12,000m2 of land, but the economic efficiency was not high. After researching and learning from effective economic models in and outside the locality, for about 4 years now, Mr. Ut has boldly converted more than 5,000m2 of land to grow about 350 peach plum trees. According to Mr. Ut, the reason he chose to grow peach plum is because this is a tree variety with good growth, high yield, delicious fruit, favored by consumers, and a fairly stable purchase price from traders. On the other hand, the climate conditions and sandy loam soil are quite suitable for plum trees. During the cultivation process, he diligently learned knowledge and techniques from gardeners; took the opportunity to participate in training courses and transfer science and technology. Thanks to his diligence in taking care of the right method, the peach plum garden has developed very well. After only 18 months, Mr. Ut harvested the first crop of fruit, achieving a high yield.
Guiding us around the plum garden that is yielding fruit, Mr. Ut could not hide his joy at the results of his family's hard work. Mr. Ut said: "When I first planted plums, I intercropped with other crops, such as squash, chili, watermelon... to "take short-term to support long-term", bringing in an income of about 50-60 million VND/year. When the plum trees grew, I only focused on taking care of the plums". On an area of 5,000m2 of plum land, Mr. Ut invested more than 30 million VND to cover the area with a net. According to Mr. Ut, although the investment cost is high, the time of using the net lasts about 5 years. The advantage of covering with a net is that it helps reduce the work of care, saves on the cost of using pesticides, and minimizes pests, especially fruit flies.
According to Mr. Ut, although planted in a net, to ensure productivity, farmers need to cultivate according to the correct technical process. Before planting pink peach plums, it is necessary to fertilize to provide nutrients, helping the tree grow well. Each plum tree is planted 3m apart, with a trellis to support the branches, ensuring that the plums do not break in storms and create ventilation for the tree. From the time the plums flower until harvest, it takes about 3 months. During the fruiting stage until harvest, it is only necessary to spray pesticides 3 times. After harvest, the tree must be nourished and fertilizer spread to nourish the roots.
Currently, Mr. Ut is processing plums to produce fruit all year round; the larger the plum tree canopy, the higher the yield. Mr. Ut shared: “Pink peach plums are quite easy to grow, easy to sell and have stable prices. On average, there are 3 fruiting seasons each year. If properly cared for, plums can yield 1.2 tons/acre/crop. Depending on the time, traders buy from 4,000-22,000 VND/kg, bringing in profits many times higher than growing rice”. On average, each year, Mr. Ut harvests plums, bringing in an income of about 200 million VND, helping his family stabilize their lives, become well-off, and raise 2 children to complete their education. Not only does he enrich his family, he is always willing to share information and exchange experiences with gardeners to increase their income.
