According to The Sun , Jeferson Merli went swimming with his girlfriend and drowned at around 6pm on August 2. Merli's girlfriend called for help and authorities found the goalkeeper's body at 9:30pm the same day.
Merli lives in Braga, about a 40-minute drive from the scene of the tragic accident. Merli currently plays for GD Caldelas (a lower division Portuguese club), based in Amares. GD Caldelas was shocked by Meri's sudden passing.
In a statement, Caldelas praised goalkeeper Merli as "a player who stands out for his team spirit and professionalism", and said he had just agreed to a new contract to continue his loyalty to the club.
"In this moment of grief, GD Caldelas expresses its solidarity and deepest condolences to the family, friends and all those who had the honor to know Merli. Caldelas Club will never forget Merli's dedication and the mark he left on all of us" - Caldelas Club wrote.
Merli was born in São Paulo (Brazil) and began his football career abroad in 2019 when he joined Safor CF in Spain. He then played for various clubs in Spain and Portugal, before signing with Caldelas in 2024.
