The death toll from flash floods in eastern Spain has risen to 158, Spanish officials said on October 31.

Flooding has devastated Valencia’s infrastructure, washing away bridges, roads and train tracks. Transport Minister Oscar Puente said about 80km of roads in the eastern region were severely damaged or impassable, and it would take two to three weeks to re-establish high-speed train connections between Valencia and the capital Madrid.

In the rural town of Utiel, the Magro River burst its banks, sending water into homes and rising up to 3m. Utiel Mayor Ricardo Gabaldon confirmed at least six people had died, most of them elderly or disabled people who could not climb to safety.

On October 28, a year's worth of rain fell on some areas of Valencia, in what is considered Spain's worst flooding disaster in recent years.

Meteorologists say human-caused climate change is making extreme weather events more frequent and destructive.
