Russia's large diesel-electric submarine, Varshavyanka class, Project 636.3 was launched on October 11 at the Admiralty Shipyard in St. Petersburg.

The submarine, named Yakutsk, is the last in a series of six Project 636.3 submarines built for the Russian Pacific Fleet.
Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy Igor Mukhametshin said the launch of the Yakutsk submarine is of great significance for the entire Russian Navy, marking the completion of all six submarines of this class as planned.Mr. Mukhametshin said that Varshavyanka-class submarines are equipped with high-precision weapons, capable of solving any tasks in any area of the world's oceans.
In September 2016, the Admiralty Shipyard signed a contract with the Russian Navy to build six submarines of this class for the Pacific Fleet.
Project 636.3 diesel-electric submarines are designed to destroy enemy surface ships and warships, submarines, patrol, conduct reconnaissance and protect communications in near-sea areas. Submarines of this project are 74 meters long, with a maximum displacement of more than 3,900 tons. They are armed with Kalibr-PL cruise missiles launched from torpedo tubes from the submerged position.
