Giant stadium, where Vietnamese fans once "shed blood", collapsed in an instant

Shah Alam Stadium demolished

Shah Alam Stadium was put into use in 1994 with a 6-tier structure. This was once one of the largest stadiums in Southeast Asia with 83,000 seats. This stadium was once a symbol of Malaysia, before Bukit Jalil Stadium was built.

In the past, Shah Alam Stadium hosted the U20 World Cup in 1997. For many Vietnamese fans, this stadium always brings great fear.

Specifically, in the first leg of the AFF Cup 2014 semi-final at Shah Alam Stadium, the Vietnamese team won 2-1 with goals from Huy Toan and Van Quyet. In the stands, Malaysian fans caused chaos. They attacked Vietnamese fans with sticks, water bottles and many other objects, causing many people to bleed.

Over time, the Shah Alam stadium has deteriorated and been severely damaged. That makes Malaysian authorities concerned about the safety of spectators.

So they decided to demolish the Shah Alam stadium and replace it with a new version with an automated roof and indoor humidity control system. The new stadium will have half the capacity of about 35,000 to 45,000 seats. Construction is expected to be completed in 2029.

Witnessing the Shah Alam Stadium collapse in an instant, many Malaysian fans felt heartbroken. This place has marked many typical football and sports events of this country. For Vietnamese fans, it is an unforgettable painful memory.
