Writing is a destiny

According to writer Chu Thi Minh Hue, coming to literature is always a long and arduous search. When she was a high school student majoring in literature, beautiful images in literature were absorbed into her through each literary work. When she started her career, living in the land of the Fatherland's border, to satisfy her passion and interests, she tried her hand at literature. The first genre was poetry, and over the years, she wrote prose, short stories, and then novels.

She confided: “Literature is a long process of discovery . The more you explore, the more interesting it is, but only after overcoming the difficulties of finding materials, plots, characters, and details in reality. In one way or another, what I have accumulated is always in a corner of my soul, when I meet the red thread of a plot, it will spontaneously pop out and become a work.”

“The Breath of Stone” Through Literature

From her first poetry collection “Doc Chin Khoanh” published in 2006, to her short stories and novels, writer Chu Thi Minh Hue has been faithful to the themes, images and identities of the rocky plateau. Among them, there are typical works that are well-known to many people such as the books: Bong chestnut soaked in dew, Duong len Hanh Phuc, Chu dat, Nguoc dong thien di, Muoi tau troi.

It can be said that exploiting the topics of the highlands and the lives of ethnic minorities has become “a mental area” in her literary career. Therefore, cultural symbols such as the Mong flute, flax, rammed earth houses, wedding and funeral customs, etc. always appear in her writings, urging readers to want to come and touch that unique cultural area.

The appeal of the works of writer Chu Thi Minh Hue has been given sharp and respectful comments by literary researchers and critics. The writing style has a contemporary feel, but has historical and cultural depth of the land and people. Not only telling stories, the author also tends to "dive" into the underground culture to "decode" the misty areas, the spiritual areas, the unspoken feelings of the highland people.

For example, in the novel “Landlord” published in 2016, this work caused a big stir when it entered the final round of the 2017-2018 novel contest of the Vietnam Writers Association , winning the B prize of the Vietnam Association of Literature and Arts of Ethnic Minorities in 2019. Every detail appears valuable, concise and extremely realistic and humane. The author of the novel was nicknamed “the daughter-in-law of the Vuong family” by the public, a nickname that not every writer is honored to have.

The text goes into the book

With the diversity in content and cultural elements, many short stories by writer Chu Thi Minh Hue not only attract readers, but are also included in the Literature program and local educational materials for grade 12 of the province for many years. This is a vivid demonstration of the lasting ideological and artistic value in the writer's works. At the same time, it shows the recognition of the Education and Training sector for writers who are deeply attached to the culture of ethnic minorities.

Student Tong Bao Thy, Hung An High School said: I have studied the works of writer Chu Thi Minh Hue, analyzed the novel "The Landlord" and the short story "Long Flax Thread". I really like both of these works because they have good, familiar and touching plots. Such lessons have nurtured the soul, aroused pride and awareness of preserving national cultural identity for the younger generations.

Master Tran Duy Hung, teacher at Hung An High School, commented: Every work by writer Chu Thi Minh Hue about nature and the daily life of the people also has the shadow of the folk culture of ethnic minorities. Those elements always come from the inherent nature, not mixed with or fading the good traditional values that need to be preserved. What makes the works alive is the understanding, the space of memories, aspirations, associated with many emotions and carrying the meaning of life.

Always flowing a literary stream from the border region and co-founding the group “Ha Giang Young Writers”, she still tirelessly connects, guides, gives advice and orientations to young writers. She is also an active member of the Song Chay Writers Association, under the Vietnam Writers Association. In this professional space, she continues to affirm her personal mark through works that have won high awards from the Vietnam Association of Literature and Arts of Ethnic Minorities.

In her story, she added: A writer needs to be persistent, and keep moving forward. Only then will the voice, the writing, the plot, and the details make readers believe that “I speak the voice of my people” is the most correct, the most trustworthy, and the best.
