The Russia-Ukraine conflict, now in its third year, has caused heavy casualties on both sides. The number of dead and wounded is difficult to assess because neither Ukraine nor Russia has publicly disclosed their losses.

The Ukrainian Ministry of Justice data covers only Ukrainian-controlled regions, excluding Russian-occupied territories such as Crimea, Luhansk, as well as parts of Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia.

In 2021, before the conflict broke out, Ukraine recorded 273,772 births.

Amid ongoing fighting, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said he is ready to negotiate directly with Russian President Vladimir Putin to bring peace .

However, the Kremlin dismissed this possibility, with spokesman Dmitry Peskov calling it "empty talk". Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump said he would speak to Mr Putin soon.
