Lam Dong durian has a good price, but farmers are sad

In August 2025, the durian harvest atmosphere in the southern communes of Lam Dong province became more bustling than ever. The price of grade 1 durian this year is still maintained at 60,000 VND/kg, a number that makes many farmers excited.

However, behind the joy of winning the price, many gardeners are facing crop losses because prolonged rain has caused the rate of damaged durian to increase.

In the durian "capital" of Da Huoai (southern Lam Dong province), hundreds of farming households have had a bumper crop.

Mr. Doan Cong Loi's family (Da Huoai 3 commune) after 3 harvests achieved a yield of about 50 tons, bringing in revenue of more than 3 billion VND.

"The traders bought everything as soon as we cut it. The price of grade 1 is over 60,000 VND/kg, selling in bulk is 50,000 VND/kg. My whole family considered it a golden season," Mr. Loi shared.

In Da Huoai 2 commune, considered the "heart" of the durian region, the cultivated area currently reaches more than 3,400 hectares, with an average income per capita of about 103.5 million VND/year, the highest in the whole province.

Mr. Le Quang Son, director of Ha Lam Agricultural Tourism Cooperative, said: "Although the price is lower than last year, the level of over 60,000 VND/kg still helps farmers earn large profits. Many member households of the cooperative have an income of several hundred million to several billion VND per year."

But the joy is not complete everywhere. Mr. Nguyen Thanh Son, director of Da M'Ri Agricultural Cooperative, expressed: "This year's weather is very erratic. It has been raining continuously since April. The fruit was developing when it encountered heavy rain, absorbing too much water, causing the fruit flesh to become dry, and even causing fungal attacks."

Many traders have placed a deposit to buy at 60,000 VND/kg. But when it comes to harvest time, they test the fruit and find it is hard, immediately forcing the price down to half, or even dirt cheap. Many gardeners have to sell off, or separate the segments to sell retail, and freeze them in the refrigerator for another occasion.

Mr. Nguyen Thai Son (Da Teh 2 commune) has 7 hectares of durian, signed a contract of 3 billion VND with traders since the end of May. But the prolonged rain caused the garden to develop fungus, many fruits were damaged. "I had to reduce 500 million VND for traders to harvest early, but then they also suffered heavy losses when reselling," said Mr. Son.

According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Lam Dong province, the durian area in the south of Lam Dong province has more than 6,000 hectares of durian that are being harvested. This is a durian area that has been granted a growing area code for most farming households.
