Leroy Sane is a regret for Bayern Munich. |
Leroy Sane left Bayern Munich after Bayern Munich beat Flamengo 4-2 in the 1/8 round of the FIFA Club World Cup 2025™ early morning of June 30. Everything happened quietly, just like the way he was present for most of his time at the Allianz Arena: no noise, no explosion, and no moment that truly belonged to him.
Expectation then disappointment
Sane arrived with the expectation of inheriting the legendary number 10 shirt from Arjen Robben, but then left when people realized: between potential and greatness there is always a gap - and the German star can never fill it.
In 2020, Bayern spent 50 million euros to bring in a fast, technical winger who had exploded for Man City under Pep Guardiola. At that time, Sane was 24 years old, in the prime of his career and was considered the ideal piece in the post-Robben - Ribery era. He was even a teammate of Vincent Kompany, who is now Bayern's head coach, and was seen as a factor that could shape the future style of play of the Bavarian team.
But after five years, all Sane has left behind is a decent statistical record and a series of “almosts”: almost explosive, almost pivotal, almost as beloved as Robben – but nothing quite complete. Among Europe’s most talented wingers, Sane is the one who inspires more regret than admiration.
Sane just had his final training session and match with Bayern, before moving to Galatasaray. Coach Kompany revealed that he “sat on the training ground for a long time” after the farewell training session, as if he couldn’t bear to leave the place where so much hope had been placed.
Leroy Sane did not leave much of an impression at Bayern Munich. |
But the farewell was not a glorious one, not the moment Robben had at Wembley in 2013, when he scored the decisive goal to lift Bayern to the Champions League. For Sane, it all ended gently - as he had lived his life at Bayern: quiet, erratic and never quite defining himself.
Even in the match against Flamengo, Sane continued to be Sane. An erratic player, missing a series of clear opportunities. It was this lack of sharpness that reinforced the belief of those who had asked: why did Bayern bring him along in such an important tournament?
The answer is because Sane is still part of the dressing room. Although he has not made a brilliant mark, the former Manchester City star has always been a respected team-mate.
Captain Manuel Neuer admitted: “I always enjoyed playing with Leroy”. New signing Jonathan Tah regretted: “I am very sad that I cannot continue playing alongside him, at least in this tournament. But that is football - that is how the game works”.
Big regret
Sane has the technique, the pace, the unusual left foot – but what he lacks is the instinct to decide a match. Robben can be quiet for 89 minutes, then turn up at the right moment to win the game. Sane is the opposite: he can be active throughout the game, but absent at the decisive moment. That’s the difference between a talented player and a great one.
Bayern Munich have just parted ways with Leroy Sane. |
No one can deny Sane’s ability, but Bayern – and clubs of their stature – need more than just skill. They need icons. They need people who create moments that will last a lifetime, who will make history. And the most regrettable thing is that, in five years in Munich, Sane has never done that.
Now, at 29, he has chosen Galatasaray as his next destination. Perhaps in Türkiye the pressure will be less, the role more defined, and Sane will have more space to reassert himself. But for Bayern, he will always be the “failed successor” - the one who was expected to fill the void left by Robben, but in the end, he disappeared like a breeze passing through the Allianz Arena.
Without fuss or tragedy, Leroy Sane left Bayern the same way he lived in the red shirt: beautiful, talented, but not reaching the legend. And when the curtain closed, people suddenly realized - he never had a moment that was truly his own.
