By doing this, the school's students are not onlyeducated about the spirit of saving and preserving "intellectual assets", but also have the opportunity to share love with their peers.
From dealing with situations during a pandemic
The beginning of the new school year 2021-2022 is the time when the Covid-19 pandemic broke out, due to social distancing, it is difficult for parents to buy textbooks. Meanwhile, students have to study online, study remotely, without textbooks, students' learning will become even more difficult.
As the head of the school, Principal Pham Thi Hai Anh cannot help but worry about how to ensure that 100% of the school's students have enough textbooks to study.
“I remember seeing old textbooks being turned into packaging, old textbooks in scrap bins… Thinking that there must be a lot of old textbooks in the community, we set up and carried out activities to mobilize and donate textbooks to students in difficult circumstances. Especially how to get books as quickly as possible for students to study in this difficult context” - Ms. Hai Anh recalled.
Trang Dai Secondary School has a student population of nearly 4,000. According to the school’s survey, every year there are about 150-200 students in difficult circumstances who need textbook support to study. The price of a set of textbooks is not too high, but for families with many children going to school or families in difficult circumstances, this is not a small amount of money. |
After finding an “opening”, Trang Dai Secondary School posted information on the school’s Facebook page. Each cadre, teacher, and staff member of the school posted information on their personal pages, and at the same time sent information requesting textbooks for grades 7, 8, and 9 (Textbooks for the 2006 General Education Program) to Zalo groups of neighborhood groups, personal groups, etc.
In the context of the Covid-19 pandemic, many textbooks have been donated to the school and the school has found a way to deliver them to students in need. In September 2021, according to the school's survey, 100% of students had enough textbooks to study.
From that initial success, at the end of the 2021-2022 school year, Trang Dai Secondary School called on students to donate textbooks for grades 6, 8, and 9 to the school. Accordingly, the school donated more than 1,300 books. After sorting, 136 sets and hundreds of individual books were identified.
From here, the Movement of Emulation for the People's Mobilization of Knowledge was born and has been carried out annually until now as a traditional activity of the school.
Practical and effective model
The movement of emulation of skillful mass mobilization of textbooks for intellectual children of Trang Dai Secondary School is carried out systematically, including 3 steps. First, the school surveys and grasps the situation of each student's self-equipment of textbooks. Then, the school decides to establish a group to receive and give textbooks to students, usually consisting of 15 members, responsible for advising on the organization of receiving, classifying and giving books to students. Finally, the school develops a plan and organizes the implementation.
Accordingly, the plan consists of 3 phases, implemented in a circular, rolling, overlapping manner. Phase 1 is the Competition to preserve textbooks for reuse over many years. This competition movement is deployed in the flag-raising meeting in the first week of the school year. In which, the school assigns the team to be in charge, with a timely summary and encouragement.
Ms. TRAN THI KIEU OANH, a parent of a student at Trang Dai Secondary School, said: “I am very pleased that the school has implemented the Textbook Program for Knowledgeable Children. Thanks to this program, my child is more aware of preserving textbooks. At the end of the year, my child donates old books and receives gifts, even though they are just pens and drinking glasses, but they have a great meaning in encouraging my child's spirit.” |
Phase 2, called Contribute books to friends at school, is usually carried out on the last 2 days of the school year (from around May 24 to 28). Accordingly, the receiving team is responsible for receiving, sorting, packing and advising on preparation for the donation of books. This phase includes summarizing and rewarding students along with rewarding end-of-school-year movements.
Phase 3, with the theme of Donating Textbooks to Support Students in the New School Year, will be carried out in mid-August (around August 14-18). During this phase, homeroom teachers will survey the textbook situation of students and make a list of students in need of support.
Based on the available book sources, if there are not enough books to give to students, the school continues to spread, mobilize, ask for old books, receive books and organize the giving of textbooks to students.
With that process, over the past 5 years, Trang Dai Secondary School has donated, mobilized and given students more than 1,000 sets of textbooks (both old and new programs) and thousands of individual textbooks.
In May 2025, Trang Dai Secondary School organized a Textbook Exchange for Gifts program, collecting more than 400 sets of textbooks and more than 600 individual books. At the year-end ceremony, the school presented more than 300 sets of books to students in grades 7, 8, and 9. Currently, there are 101 sets of grade 6 textbooks and hundreds of individual books that will be given to students at the beginning of the 2025-2026 school year.
