Retegui breaks Italian football transfer record

The summer transfer market was further animated when Mateo Retegui, Serie A's top scorer last season, officially left Atalanta to join Al Qadsiah of the Saudi Pro League.

The deal was announced on July 21, with the 26-year-old signing a four-year contract. Although neither side disclosed financial details, Italian media confirmed the transfer fee was around 65 million euros ( 76 million USD ). This is a record figure, making Retegui the most expensive Italian player in football history.

Joining Atalanta from Genoa to replace the injured Gianluca Scamacca, Retegui immediately proved his worth, scoring 25 goals in Serie A, helping the Bergamo club to an impressive third-place finish.

Atalanta paid tribute to the striker's dedication in an official statement: "The Percassi family, the Pagliuca family and the entire club would like to thank Mateo for his extraordinary contribution last season and wish him every success in his new journey."

Born in Argentina, Retegui is eligible to play for the Italian national team thanks to his grandparents. He was called up by coach Roberto Mancini in 2023 and scored on his debut in a 1-2 defeat to England. To date, Retegui has scored 6 goals in 20 matches for the “Azzurri”, becoming one of the great hopes in attack.

At Al Qadsiah, Retegui will take over the attacking role after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang left the club last week. The Gabon striker finished an impressive season with 21 goals in 36 games.
