Looking back on the 80-year journey, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son made assessments of the role, outstanding milestones, and important contributions of the industry to the struggle for independence and freedom and to the construction and development of the country.

The Deputy Prime Minister shared that, born in the historic autumn of August 1945, the Diplomatic sector was honored and proud to have been directly founded and laid the foundation by President Ho Chi Minh .

General Secretary To Lam works with the Party Committee of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in August 2024.

During the 80 years that followed, Diplomacy has made important contributions, leaving a strong mark in each historical stage, from the period of gaining and maintaining independence, to the resistance war against colonialism and imperialism, and to building and defending the Fatherland today.

In the "critical" situation, facing "internal and external enemies" in the early days of the country's founding, Diplomacy took the lead in the struggle to maintain the achievements of the revolution, preserve the people's government, and prolong the time to prepare forces for a long-term resistance war.

The exemplary diplomatic moves of the 1946 Preliminary Agreement and the 1946 Provisional Agreement as well as the tireless efforts at the Dalat Conferences and at Fontainebleau, put the country in the best possible position given the country's dire circumstances at that time.

During the resistance war against colonialism and imperialism, the diplomatic sector both served the resistance war and actively fought to break the siege and isolation, while expanding relations with the outside world and gaining support from international friends.

Along the military and political fronts, Vietnamese diplomacy promoted victories on the battlefield to force countries to sit at the negotiating table.

The Geneva Agreement and the Paris Agreement were not only brilliant diplomatic milestones but also created opportunities for the great victory of national reunification, ending 30 years of arduous war against foreign invaders of the Vietnamese people.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son shared with the press

In the post-war reconstruction period, Diplomacy was the pioneering force in gradually breaking the siege and embargo, helping the country overcome socio-economic difficulties.

At the same time, normalize relations with China, restore relations with Southeast Asian countries, normalize diplomatic relations with the United States and expand relations with other countries.

With the policy of “diversification and multilateralization”, diplomatic relations are increasingly expanded. The Deputy Prime Minister said that Vietnam now has diplomatic relations with 194 countries, established a network of strategic partnerships and comprehensive partnerships with 38 countries, including all permanent members of the Security Council, G7 countries, most G20 countries, and is an active member of more than 70 international organizations....

Know yourself, know others, know the times

"Vietnam's diplomacy was born and matured during 30 years of resistance war and has grown stronger during 40 years of renovation. Being forged and tested during the most difficult periods of Vietnam's revolutionary history has left Vietnamese diplomacy with many valuable lessons," the Deputy Prime Minister affirmed.

At the 3rd Diplomatic Conference in 1964, President Ho Chi Minh advised that diplomacy “must always serve the interests of the nation”. His thoughts have been imbued and implemented by generations of leaders and diplomatic officials over the past 80 years.

The Deputy Prime Minister said that it is also a lesson about the Party's unified and absolute leadership, being sensitive in assessing and grasping the situation, and being decisive in making decisions...

The lesson of combining internal strength with external strength, combining national strength with the strength of the times to create a great combined strength, thereby mobilizing the enormous support both materially and spiritually of progressive humanity to support Vietnam.

Lessons on being steadfast in principles but flexible in strategies according to the motto "responding to all changes with the unchanging"; lessons on the importance of solidarity and consensus; the skillful application of the "five knowledges" (knowing oneself, knowing others, knowing the situation, knowing when to stop and knowing when to change), the ability to create and seize opportunities, and the diplomacy of mind and heart that helps win people's hearts with justice, humanity, reason and morality.

The Deputy Prime Minister emphasized that these lessons have contributed to forming core values that create a diplomacy imbued with the national identity and Vietnamese people...

The Deputy Prime Minister shared that Vietnam’s success story has inspired the international community. During the period of national liberation struggle, Vietnam was considered a symbol of the struggle for independence and freedom, the embodiment of a heroic and resilient country.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres during his visit to Vietnam in 2022.

The Vietnamese people's struggle for independence is considered the "conscience" of the era, turning an unnamed land on the world map into a symbol of peace and friendship.

Today, Vietnam is highly appreciated from the perspective of a country that is rising strongly, becoming a successful model in socio-economic development, with an increasing role and voice in the international arena.

"I remember the statement of United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres in many meetings mentioning Vietnam as a model of peace and sustainable development.

Or ASEAN Secretary General Kao Kim Hourn emphasized that Vietnam is an important member, making key contributions to strengthening solidarity and enhancing ASEAN's position and capacity in dialogue and cooperation with global partners on the occasion of 30 years of Vietnam joining ASEAN," said the Deputy Prime Minister.

Many leaders of other countries and international organizations, through their words and actions, also highly appreciate Vietnam's role in the international arena, believing that Vietnam is a reliable partner, an active and responsible member of the international community.

Over eight decades, under the leadership of the Party and State, Vietnamese diplomacy has continuously grown strongly.

Vietnam's diplomacy will continue to implement a foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, multilateralization, diversification, active and proactive international integration, upholding multilateralism, respecting international law, actively contributing to a peaceful, stable and developing environment in the region and around the world...
