Earlier, on August 31, Israeli forces discovered six bodies in a tunnel under the city of Rafah in Gaza.

US President Joe Biden confirmed that American citizen Hersh Goldberg-Polin was among six hostages killed by the Palestinian Hamas movement.

In a statement, President Biden said: "Early this morning (August 31), in a tunnel beneath the city of Rafah, Israeli forces found the bodies of six hostages held by Hamas. We have now confirmed that one of the hostages killed was an American citizen, named Hersh Goldberg-Polin."

Mr Biden has insisted that Hamas leaders will pay a price for these crimes, while work is underway to reach a deal to secure the release of the remaining hostages.

Hours earlier, President Biden said the parties involved in Gaza ceasefire talks had reached a basic consensus on a possible deal.
