Swiss engineer Ken Pillonel has just introduced a new solution that allows users of older iPhone models using the Lightning port to connect to a full-function USB-C port without upgrading the device. Specifically, this is a special case that adds a USB-C port to iPhone models using the Lightning port.
Pillonel, known for its 2021 project to change the hardware to integrate a USB-C port into the iPhone X, has now created a snap-on case that brings this modern connection port to any iPhone equipped with a Lightning port.
This accessory, branded “Obsoless,” was developed by Pillonel as a solution to “planned obsolescence,” similar to the iPhone X or AirPods charging case he previously customized.
“The goal is to breathe life into older devices by making them less obsolete. This means that owners of older iPhones can get a few more years out of their current devices, thanks to the convenience of the USB-C port – an industry standard,” Pillonel said.

What makes this new iPhone case different, however, is that it’s a widely available commercial product. The case is designed in two parts, clamping onto compatible iPhone models and connecting directly to the Lightning port via a precisely aligned connector.
Unlike conventional adapters that can fail under high stress, Pillonel says the case is equipped with a custom circuit board that ensures full USB-C functionality including fast charging support (9V), data transfer, and Apple CarPlay compatibility, as well as wireless charging and MagSafe compatibility.
This case is compatible with 20 iPhone models using the Lightning port, from the iPhone SE to the iPhone 14 series. Specifically, the product supports the iPhone 11, 12, 13, 14 series and even the iPhone XS models.
However, the product still has some limitations. Accessories that require power from the iPhone, such as wired headphones, external hard drives, or monitors, will not be compatible with this case. The reason is the limitation of the power supply capacity.
With the USB-C port located in the lower right corner of the case, users will not be entangled by the charging cable when holding the phone horizontally. This design is very convenient for playing games or watching movies.
This case costs around $50-$60 . According to information from the Obsoless website, the product will soon be added with new colors such as pink, blue, green and white.
Apple has switched to USB-C port for iPhone 15 series and later in 2023. However, millions of users are still using iPhone devices with Lightning port.
While Apple continues to support older iPhone models through software updates, this difference in port type can be inconvenient, especially as other electronics have gradually moved to the USB-C standard.
