Earlier, US President Joe Biden announced that January 9 would be a national day of mourning for the late President Jimmy Carter. In response to the above move, President-elect Donald Trump complained on January 3 about the flag being flown at half-staff at his inauguration in a post on the Truth Social platform. “The Democrats are all ‘happy’ that our magnificent American flag will be flying at half-staff at my inauguration,” Mr. Trump accused.
“They think it’s great and they’re very happy about it,” the president-elect said. “Because in reality, they don’t love our country, they only think about themselves.”
Mr Trump said that because of the death of President Carter last week, “for the first time in history, the American flag will be flown at half-staff during the inauguration of a future president.” “Nobody wants to see that and no American can be happy about it,” Mr Trump said.
White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said there were no plans to reconsider President Biden’s decision. Biden has directed that “for the same period, all U.S. representatives abroad will take similar measures, flying the flag at half-staff at their embassies, diplomatic missions, consular offices, and other facilities abroad, including all military bases, ships, and naval stations.”
