In the opening match of the 2026 Asian Cup Women's Qualifiers against a much weaker opponent, Maldives, coach Mai Duc Chung proactively kept many key players such as Hoang Thi Loan, Chuong Thi Kieu, Kim Thanh, Hai Yen and Huynh Nhu on the bench from the start of the match. However, the Vietnamese women's team still won by a margin of 7 goals to nil.
However, this result is not too excellent when this opponent has lost to the Vietnamese women's team twice, each time scoring more than 10 goals against the opponent (won 14-0 at the 2004 AFF Cup and won 16-0 in the 2022 Asian women's qualifiers).
In this match, with the home team mentality, the Vietnamese female strikers proactively pushed forward right from the opening whistle, the Vietnamese women's team quickly created great pressure on the opponent's goal. In the 7th minute, Minh Chuyen broke through on the right wing and then shot from a narrow angle. The ball bounced back after a Maldives defender's attempt to block, and Van Su quickly rushed in to head the ball to open the score.
Vietnam women's team leads the opponent with 6 unanswered goals after the first half
Just 4 minutes later, from a corner kick on the left, Van Su received the ball from the edge of the penalty area into the middle and shot dangerously into the far corner, raising the score to 2-0. Immediately after that, the Maldives defense appeared confused with a high ball, creating an opportunity for Bich Thuy to finish close to the goal, scoring the third goal in the 14th minute.
In the 25th minute, Nguyen Thi Van received a cross from the left wing, controlled it neatly and then finished to increase the gap to 4 goals. In the 30th minute, the score was raised to 5-0 when My Anh had a rebound kick from Bich Thuy's blocked shot. After that, coach Mai Duc Chung quickly withdrew My Anh and Nguyen Thi Van to rest, bringing Nguyen Thi Hoa and Thai Thi Thao onto the field.
Before the first half ended, Ngoc Minh Chuyen accelerated down, faced the goalkeeper and coolly finished into the far corner, helping the Vietnamese women's team lead 6-0 going into the break.
Hai Yen set the score 7-0 for Vietnam
Thus, coach Mai Duc Chung's experiment with the trio Bich Thuy, Van Su and Minh Chuyen brought many dangerous opportunities and all scored in the first half.
In the second half, Huynh Nhu and Hai Yen were brought onto the field to significantly increase their attacking power. However, coach Mai Duc Chung's team only had 1 more goal from Hai Yen in the 66th minute and a missed penalty from Huynh Nhu.
With this result, the Vietnamese women's team topped Group E with 3 points. Meanwhile, the opponents UAE and Guam were behind with 1 point after holding each other to a scoreless draw in the early match. In the next match, the Vietnamese women's team will meet UAE at 7 p.m. on July 2.
