Shooting at Armenian border

Armenia's Defense Ministry announced on February 13 that two soldiers were killed and several others were injured after an attack at a combat post near the village of Nerkin Hand, according to Reuters.

Azerbaijani border guards said they carried out a retaliatory operation after a provocation the previous day by Armenian forces. Azerbaijan said it would respond more severely and decisively if it faced further provocations.

"The Armenian military and political leadership bears full responsibility for this incident," according to Azerbaijani forces. The country's Defense Ministry accused Armenian forces of firing at Azerbaijani positions along the border on the evening of February 12. Armenia denied the information and said the incident did not occur.

Armenia and Azerbaijan have been at odds for decades over the Nagorno-Karabakh region, which is widely recognized as Azerbaijani territory but is controlled by an ethnic Armenian majority. The two sides fought two wars in the 1990s and 2020.

In September 2023, Azerbaijan regained control of the Nagorno-Karabakh region after a rapid military operation that led to the evacuation of nearly all of the Armenian population there and the start of peace treaty negotiations. Since the dialogue began, the situation on the border has been largely peaceful.

However, dialogue in recent months is said to have hit a deadlock as both sides accuse each other of sabotaging the diplomatic process.
