More than 30 years ago, Mr. Tran Van Son in Khe 5 village, Son Kim 1 commune (Huong Son) received a contract for 23 hectares of forest to be protected and nurtured from the project of planting 5 million hectares of new forests according to Decision 661/QD-TTg dated July 29, 1998 of the Prime Minister . Since then, his family has been making efforts to care for, protect, and replant the forest so that it becomes greener and greener.

Currently, Mr. Son’s family forest has hundreds of green lim, doi mo, gong trees…, diameter from 100 – 200cm, worth tens of billions of dong. This is considered the source of “green gold” of the border region of Ha Tinh .
Khe 5 village currently has about 80/124 households receiving forest protection and conservation with different areas of different sizes. Among them, Mr. Pham Quang Minh has 3 hectares with many large trees located close to his garden. In this regenerated forest, there are many trees of xoan, green lim, doi mo, sang le, gong... over 70 years old with diameters from 100 - 300cm.

Although the price is from 50 to 70 million VND/perennial native tree, Mr. Minh still firmly refuses to sell. For him, this regenerated forest is not only a priceless asset, a "sweet fruit" after decades of persistent care and protection, but it is also a responsibility to nature and the old forest.

Mr. Phan Huu Duan - Head of Khe 5 village (Son Kim 1 commune) said: The whole village has 80 households contracted to protect and preserve over 3,000 hectares of regenerated forest (green ironwood accounts for about 40%); in which, there are households owning over 10 hectares such as: Mrs. Tran Thi Nga, Mr. Tran Van Son, Mr. Tran Ngoc Lam, Mr. Luu Trong Bang...
“For our people, these natural forests are invaluable assets, so everyone has a high sense of responsibility and joins hands to protect and care for them. In addition to the help of forest rangers, border guards, police, and local authorities, the village has established four forest protection teams to take turns patrolling and guarding to prevent forest encroachment,” informed Mr. Phan Huu Duan.

To promote regeneration and enrichment of previously depleted natural forests and protect the "green gold" of the mountains and forests, large forest owners in Huong Son have also demonstrated their role and sense of responsibility.
Mr. Le Duc Long - Deputy Head of Nga Doi Branch (Huong Son Forestry and Service Company Limited) said: "We and the neighboring people always pay special attention to and protect the 65-hectare nursery garden of the unit. In this nursery garden, there are currently thousands of native trees over 50 years old, with a diameter of over 70cm, mostly green lim and do mat. From this nursery garden, tens of thousands of young trees are provided each year for the unit and the people in the area to green the assigned natural forests and promote regeneration".

According to Mr. Le Ngoc Danh - Head of Huong Son Forest Protection Department, in recent years, we have joined in propaganda and mobilization of people to plant and enrich thousands of hectares of forest and medicinal plants under the forest canopy. Currently, we are working with functional forces and communities to continue to care for, protect, manage and develop regenerating forests and depleted natural forests to make the forests greener.
Mr. Tran Quang Hoa - Deputy Head of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Huong Son district said: “In recent years, the district has made efforts to implement Resolution No. 123 and Resolution No. 51 of the Provincial People's Council to improve the quality of poor forests. Accordingly, implementing these policies, from 2021 to present, the whole district has provided nearly 6 billion VND in support to protect natural forests; more than 4.8 billion VND for additional planting and enrichment of natural forests, which are production forests, with indigenous trees; more than 12.4 billion VND for developing 1,244 non-timber forest products and medicinal plants under the forest canopy. Along with the above resources, all levels and sectors have also focused on drastic measures to encourage people to do a good job in zoning, promoting regeneration, protecting and developing forests”.
