Vietnamese hacker group commits "terrible" crimes in the US

Reuters cited a file recently released by the US Attorney's Office for the District of New Jersey confirming that the four Vietnamese hackers involved in the charges include: Tai Van Tai (other names used: Quynh Hoa, Bich Thuy), Nguyen Viet Quoc (Tien Nguyen), Nguyen Trang Xuyen and Nguyen Van Truong (Chung Nguyen).

They are all members of an international cybercrime group called FIN9 and were discovered by the US Department of Justice .

“The defendants were professional international hackers. For years, they used phishing campaigns, supply chain attacks, and other methods to steal millions of dollars. They did this while hiding behind keyboards, VPNs, and fake identities. Our office is committed to pursuing justice for the victims,” said U.S. Attorney Philip R. Seller.

The indictment alleges that FIN9 hacked into the computer networks of multiple U.S. businesses between May 2018 and October 2021. The defendants used the access they gained to steal or attempt to steal nonpublic information, employee benefits, and funds, causing more than $71 million in losses to targeted businesses.

"The FIN9 group, no matter how smart they thought they were, could not hide the fact that they stole data from victim companies," said the FBI representative in charge of the case.

The records also show that in addition to cyberattacks and stealing confidential information from businesses, FIN9 members also stole personal data and credit card information related to employees or customers of the victim company.

Notably, to conceal their identities when consuming illegal assets, the FIN9 group sometimes used the victims' own information to register online accounts on cryptocurrency exchanges or server services.

Defendants Tai, Xuyen, and Truong sold the stolen gift cards to third parties to conceal the origin of the criminal proceeds.

Charged with wire fraud, extortion and computer-related activity, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, and intentional damage to a protected computer, the hackers could face decades in prison if convicted.
